Nothing happens when I click on "Configure Firewall"

I've been using Sophos since v7 and now using Sophos Endpoint Security with AV v 9.5.1 and CF 2.5.0 on a Windows XP SP3 PC.

It's been working fine for several weeks until last night when I uninstalled Nero v9.

During the uninstall I got a pop up from Sophos saying that  firewall had been set to allow all traffic.

Tried to click on configure firewall to re-enable it and nothing happens, no error, no egg timer and no pop up.  There are no errors in any of the windows event logs

Even though the message said it had been set to allow all traffic I have no network access unless I stop the CF service.

So I uninstalled Sophos completely, rebooted, removed folders and regkeys left behind and tried a reinstall.

Same thing happens.

I have run a complete AV scan, with no result.

All the other links in the Sophos Endpoint Security and Control window work fine, including the Firewall log, just not the Configure Firewall.

I thought that it may be corrupt config but surely the uninstall would have fixed it.

Any ideas ?

  • Hello RabT,

haven't encountered a comparable situation (although something vaguely similar after an up-/downgrade test before the final reboot - but then the firewall service wasn't running)

So the Firewall and the Firewall Management services are running? Does SCF still block (or seem to block) all traffic? As you can access the logs - what's in the firewall System Log? And do the other logs contain recent entries?

Is your computer managed by SEC or SCC? If so, it receives - or should receive - a policy from the console.

The configuration is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Sophos Client Firewall\ (but not viewable with an editor).

  • If both the services are running SCF seems to block all network traffic, even although the pop-up from the sophos shield on the taskbar tells me it's set to allow all traffic.

I am now having this issue on two different PCs, one a corporate image managed by SEC, and one a home PC with no management.

The both had a working config before this issue.

They both have a file called Configuration.conf in the location you mention.

I made sure that I deleted C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos before trying to re-install.  So this file was recreated during install.

It's made more annoying by the fact that we have 3000+ clients working fine and both these PCs are IT staff PCs

Just mulling it over ...On both Nero has been uninstalled? Or did it just "happen" on the second one? All 3000+ have SCF?

We don't want to make Support redundant so why not give them a call?

  • Just started happening on other PC.  Yes all PCs have SCF.  Thought I'd try forums before our support company (reseller)  in the hope that I might get an answer before next version is out !

AFAIK all customers are entitled to "direct" support. As this problem seems to "spread" and apparently none of the readers has encountered something like it I don't think that you'll get a "quick" solution here.
