Installing SEC4.5 with database from Sophos Control Center

Hello,

today i found out that it isn't possible to upgrade to SEC4.5 from SCC 4.0. Stange, because i used the upgrade advisor before installation, and all the results where positive.

When i start the setup.exe of SEC4.5, i get 2 errors. The first one 'Could not set database feature state to INSTALLATIE_LOCAL. One of the parameters was invalid.' The second error: 'This product cannot be installed over Sophos Control Center 4.0'.

I would like to use our existing database in SEC4.5. Does anyone has a clue?

Regards,

Remy

  • Hi,

Although very similar there is no upgrade path from SCC to SEC.  Is there anything in particular you are trying to preserve?

The key thing, if you pardon the pun is to back up the certificate keys on the server.  This way at least all the clients will be manageable in SEC after the upgrade and will just report in.

So on the SCC server, take a backup of:

    HKLM\Software\[wow6432node]\Sophos\Certification Manager\CertAuthStore

It is left behind on uninstall anyway, incase you do a reinstall but better safe than sorry.

Before installing SEC, import the key, this way new certificates will not be generated by the install of the server components thus enabling all the clients to still communicate with the server and therefore be managed in SEC.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the info. I will do the install on the same server, the best for us is to keep the same share for updates (this must be possible), and i want to preserve the computers which are managed by Sophos control center. Is this possible?

  • If you preserve the keys as Jak said the clients will report to SEC then and "appear" in the console and be managed. Note that uninstalling of the management server (whether SCC or SEC) will not uninstall anything on the clients so they will continue to work as before except that they won't get updates (unless they have Sophos set as Alternative Source).

You don't need to keep the share as the computers - using SEC you assign the correct update location to the clients once it is set up.

  • After installing SEC 4.5, i can't connect to the management server. An error appears.

    Management server connection failed

Could not connect to the Management server.

This may be due to one of the following:

    - local network problems

    - Management service had stopped on the server (i think this causes the problem, the service is stopped, and i cant start it. Error 0x80004005: unspecifed error appears.)

    - Your database service has stopped (service is started, also restarted it, just in case)

    - A Firewall is blocking the connection

    - The management service is not installed on the server

    Anyone got a clue?

  • Please take a look at (the mentioned logs are in  [%ProgramData%|...All Users\Application Data]\Sophos\Sophos Endpoint Management\4.5\log) and article 66028. If it doesn't help please come back with what you've found so far.
