License distribution over small lab network

Hello,

My apologies as this is my first run with Sophos and I am not well versed in setting up and administering anti-virus software on a server.

I recently installed Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection (v9.5) on our GIS lab's server, which operates on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

The server distributes GIS software licenses to each of the lab laptops (Windows 7) linked up to the network. After I installed Sophos, I noticed an error when trying to run the GIS software on any of the networked laptops; the license cannot be found. This was not an issue before installing Sophos; the server distributed the licenses over the lab network to each laptop with no problems. I have tried to figure out how to reconfigure Sophos to allow for license distribution across the network, but have not found a resolution.

Another peculiar thing I noticed is that the laptops recognize one another on the network, but do not recognize the server. And the server does not recognize any of the laptops - when selecting "protect other computers" from the SESDP control panel the search wizard runs for hours to no result. The laptops and the server are operating under the same administrator account settings - same username, same password.

I need to 1) get the server to recognize the other laptops on the network and vice versa and 2) get the server to distribute the GIS software licenses to the laptops.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

John

  • Hi John

    Hope I can help.

    On the first 1, regarding the server to recognize the machines;
Windows 7 does need some tweaking so the console can automatically deploy to them.
    The following article will help:http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/15027.html

Additionally after running the 'Protect computers wizard' either the icon for the little machine will turn blue(managed) or there will be a little yellow exclamation mark telling you it failed.

Onto the second question, 2, GIS software license distribution.

Sophos has the capability of stopping programs from running if they are showing behaviour which might not be conducive to the health of the machine.
They are detected as suspicious files. It is likely that this program is detected as suspicious.

You can confirm this in the quarantine on the local machine. Once confirmed you will need to authorize this program. (preferably authorize this in the console)

The below link will guide you with dealing with suspicious files.

If you would like to find out more about setting up sophos, on the site they has a section for best practices, else contact them. They always more than willing to help.
