Sophos

Remote Management System

When I log off my Windows XP SP3 laptop I get an error message WINDOWS DDE ERROR  (imonitor,almon.exe,ctfmon.exe error sometimes ) .

I installed sophos 9.7 as standalone  and I uninstalled adobe acrobat, flash and most of the programs. I ran spybot and other antivirus and spyware solutions, rootkit utilities and they are not finding anything

When I installed sophos on the network I have the same problem. If I delete on the registry the HLM\ software, sophos and I reinstall sophos from the network the message disappeared but, the sophos agent service disappears. I unistalled and installed sophos and I get the message back.

If I terminate the almon.exe process on the taskbar manually and log off the error messages disappears. I do not know if it is a virus or a problem with sophos or the regestry. The same is happening in 5 other laptop.

Please help.

  • Hello Traff,

other than the message appearing when you log off - do you have any problems or does the logoff proceed? I know a laptop where a similar message appears but the user says it is not even annoying as it when pops up it sometimes closes by itself without user intervention and otherwise it gives the option to end the task (IIRC) after which the logoff finishes. Don't know if Sophos or some manufacturer pre-installed "additional value" application is the culprit. It is said that this hotfix sometimes helps.

  • When I ran the hotfix from Microsoft I get and message (setup detected that the servicespack version pf this system is newer than the updated you are applying).

I uninstalled every single application except sophos I am still getting the Windows DDE error (almon.exe). I installed another Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials and unistalled sophos and the message dissapears.

I think is to do with the sophos agent service. What else can I do to stop the message?

  • Sorry about the hotfix, never attempted to apply it.

    I uninstalled every single application

Are the laptops all of the same type and with a preinstalled OS? That's not to exonerate Sophos but as I said I've only seen it on one computer and I'm just curious.

I suggest you call Support as the knowledgebase also seems to be unaware of this issue.

  • I have been using sophos in these computers for the last 3 years. 4 of them are dell 745 the others are Toshiba Satellite pro A300 and 2 Toshiba Satellite A100.

Sophos was working ok with Entreprise Console 4.0 after the upgrade to Entreprise Console 4.5. We had problems uninstalling sophos and after we managed to reinstalled sophos to Antivirus 9.5, It was working for about 3 months with no problem until a few week ago we starting noticing the error message WINDOWS DDE almon.exe.

I noticed that in some computer the Sophos agent was not working as well. We have the same setup in another school with no problems at all. I took one of the laptops to the other school and it is the same problem.

Do you have an utility to check that Sophos is working correctly?

Obviously it is not . As it worked before and now doesn't and the behaviour is reproducible I'd call Sophos support. You say it started while you still had 9.5? And is it the same on both versions?
