We ran into an issue with our configuration of Application Control and I wanted to post details in case anyone else ran into the same thing.
Our server WAS configured to place "all programs added by Sophos in the future" on the disallowed list for the "office suites" group of programs. I consider that a mistake on my part, but I still wanted to share this for anyone else that may run into the same issue.
According to the postings, Sophos added identies for the 2003, 2007, and 2010 versions of Microsoft Office today (see: /search?q= 4985).
Because my system was configured to add "all future programs added by Sophos..." to the disallowed list automatically, this caused all the common versions of Microsoft Office to be blocked from executing.
It took about 15 minutes to sort out (big thanks to Tech Support) and another 5 - 10 minutes for new policies to be pushed out to the clients, but it got fixed up. We had to move all the new identies for MS Office and the the "all added..." to the allowed list.
I just wanted to let anyone else know who may see the same issue what the solution was.
