Will stand-alone clients automatically upgrade from 9.5 to 9.7?

Hi;

Our license terms allow us to installed Sophos on personal computers at home. Those computers cannot be managed by the console. Is there a way to have stand-alone clients automatically upgrade between minor version numbers?

Thanks,

Steve

  • Hi,

You could try changing the string in the textfile "TopLevelCatalogue.dat" on the machines.

    E.g.
    \ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config \TopLevelCatalogue.dat
    \Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config \TopLevelCatalogue.dat

    To be "sdds.esc97 ".

  • Wow! Thanks for the speedy, insightful reply. Is there a manual or white paper where I could have learned that?

I found the \Program Files entry, but the path:

    \ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config \TopLevelCatalogue.dat

does not exist on my Windows XP machine.

  • Hi,

    It's under "\ProgramData" for Vista+ and "\Program files\" for 2000/XP/2003.

    I just compared a SAV 9.7 against a SAV 9.5.

    Cheers,

    Jak

  • Ahhh... I should have caught that.

I tested and indeed after triggering an update, the stand-alone 9.5 client went and obtained the 9.7 update. After a reboot the client now reports 9.7.  Very nice, no obvious problems.:smileyvery-happy:

But, although this works and is easier than manually downloading and installing 9.7, I'm still wondering if there is a way to make the stand-alone client automaticallty check for, and then apply without user intervention, minor version updates.

I was not even aware that 9.7 was out until I happened to visit the Sophos website. (I'm not on the team here at work that is responsible for the Enterprise Console and the managed clients).

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Hello Steve,

the stand-alone clients are automatically upgraded when their version is about to be retired. I fancy that the standalone clients use the same logic for updating as managed clients using Sophos as secondary location. If you decide to postpone the upgrade for your managed clients for whatever reason you wouldn't want your (traveling) clients to upgrade when they can't reach your server only to downgrade later when they're "home again".
