SEC4.0+ - Unassigned Folder

All,

We are building a new domain; adding and removing servers as we go (some are temporary, some permanent).  To keep things simple I am deleting the contents of the Unassigned folder prior to doing a 'Find new computers' so that everything listed is what is currently in the domain (accounting for those temporary servers that have come and gone).  However, when I delete and then run Find, I'm getting multiple entries for the same machines in the Unassigned folder.

Anyone know what's causing the duplication?

Also, does anyone know the process that the 'Find new computers' process follows in populating the Unassigned group?  Is it just looking for machine in the Users & Computers list of the domain?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Yabusame,

which sub-function of Find ... do you use? Before guessing the cause this information could help in narrowing the search. I think you are using Find with and not Import from AD.

Also I'd like to mention that Delete doesn't remove the computer from the database (in the SBS version it was and might still be called Hide). It just flags the entry and excludes the computer from the display. If the computer is "found" or is protected (or just was switched off) and subsequently reports to the console it is un-deleted keeping some of its original attributes (like group membership).

I assume the "multiples" have different attributes - look at Computer details where they differ. Then we'll see.

  • Hi Christian,

I am using the Find with Active Directory.  I do a Find then protect the machine I want then delete the others from the [Unassigned] folder.  Then I need to protect another machine so I do a Find and multiple entries appear.  I protect a machine (which has duplicate entries) and it becomes a single entry.

  • Hello Neil,

I do a Find and multiple entries appear.  I protect a machine ...

So you just arbitrarily select one of these entries and after successful protection you have one entry in the correct group (as you can't protect it from the Unassigned group)?

Now, the entries probably differ in some attributes.  If you ever used Find on the network and later deleted these computers, the entries still exist and contain a domain/workgroup. Using Find with AD will then result in duplicate entries (one with and one without domain/workgroup). This behaviour is still present in SEC4.5. There have been some changes (and improvements) in the logic for "unearthing" previously deleted computers so I can't say exactly how it works with SEC4.0.

Anyway these "multiple entries" seem to work "correctly" insofar as

    1. the computer can be protected
    2. afterwards only one entry is visible

For me (SEC4.5) whether there is eventually a single entry or not depends on the existing attributes and the entry I select though.

You did not say that an already protected computer "drops back" to Unassigned group with one or more "ghosts" re-appearing when you use Find again. Or does it?

Anyway I'd not rely upon Find at all and also not protect the computers one by one.

    Christian.
