Unmanaged computers into console

Hello everybody,

I´ve used Sophos for some months and I installed manualy in all client machines, but some machines appear in console like unmanaged, but the Sophos already was installed in these machines.

Someone knows if´s possible to follow some procedure to fix it or is really necessary to reinstall client instalation in these machines?

Thank´s for all

  • Hi,

I guess that you installed from the CID-network share \\servername\SophosUpdate\cids\s000\savscfxp\setup.exe or from a copy, i.e. a copy on a USB-stick.

In some cases it might happen that a manual install won't install "Sophos Remote Management Management System". You can check this easily in the list of installed software. In these cases, the easiest solution is to doubleclick the File "Sophos remote management system.msi" in the cache-folder. For XP, this is C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\rms

    Best regards,

  • Hello Emerson,

The most common cause of unmanaged machines is that the ports needed by the managment system are blocked. Please add port exceptions 8192, 8193, 8194 to any firewalls on the client and server. This can be checked by a telnet test on this port.

    On the server;

    telnet <ipaddressofclient> 8192

    On the client

    telnet <ipaddressofserver> 8192

If you get an IOR return both ways then check that the RMS is installed correctly on the client.

If you get an IOR return then there is a block on the port both ways and the firewall exception will be needed to be added on both firewalls

If you get an IOR one way only then the firewall exceptions need to be added on the machine you were trying to connect to but failed.

  • Hello,

    Thank´s for the answer.

I made these tests, but I think that it´s no the problem, because I´m able to access my server by telnet.

  • Hello,

First of all I would to say thank you for your answer.

I installed this MSI in machines that has the problem to make some tests, but until now still appear like unmanaged into console.

I´ll wait some time to see the results.

    Thank´s again.

  • Hello,

I waited for two days after install the MSI package, but these machines still appear like unmanaged on console.

Do you have some another idea about how can solve this problem?

  • RMS creates a connection report as a html-page, you can open it from Start/Programs/Sophos/Sophos Endpoint Security, there should be a link to "Network communications report" (or similar, my installations have a german language).

This report is well structured and will give you several informations about what RMS could do and what it could not do. RMS is the communications component of Sophos Endpoint Security, and all management functions rely on this component to establish the communication between the server and the client. If a client does not appear, then RMS does have a problem.
