Upgrading Sophos Endpoint Security and Control

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but do I need to uninstall the existing Sophos Endpoint Security and Control [Anti-Virus 7.6.20 & Client Firewall 1.5.8] on Standalone PCs before installing the latest versions [i.e. Anti-Virus 9.5 & Client Firewall 2.5] or can I just install the new version on top of your current version?

Any advise would be appreciated and apologies if this has already been covered and I've missed it.

Thanks

  • Hello ramero,

while I think it should work I haven't tested it.

Where do these PCs update from - a company server or Sophos? Just asking 'cause "standalone" could simply mean "unmanaged" and changing the update location to point to the new version might be all that's needed (I've only done it for 9.0/2.0 though).

How many "standalones" do you have? And from where do you intend to install the new version? A custom installer or the one from Sophos?

In any case - don't forget to back up the configuration (especially for SCF).

  • Hi,

The easiest way I've found of upgrading a standalone machine updating from Sophos is to edit the file:

    C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config\TopLevelCatalogue.dat

    (Adjust to %Programdata% for Vista+)

    and change the line from:

    sdds.esc9

    to:

    sdds.esc95

save the file and initiate an update.

    Thanks,

    Jak

  • Hello Christian & Jak,

First of all, my thanks to both of you for responding.

I didn't pursue the opportunity to try out an over the top upgrade from Anti-Virus 7.6.20 & Client Firewall 1.5.8 to the latest version of Endpoint Security and Control.

I'd been away for a few days and on return picked up Jak's posting which appealed to me because my setup is:

[1] purely Standalone, not networked & without the benefit of having Enterprise Console installed on a Windows Server AND

[2] whilst AutoUpdate is linked to the Sophos address it doesn't appear to accommodate version UPGRADES in Standalone situations

The bottom line was that Jak's approach was "The Bee's Knees" & worked a treat.

I applied the "TopLevelCatalogue.dat" changes to both the Standalone Win7 & WinXP machines and both faultlessly upgraded to the latest Endpoint Security and Control version [Anti-Virus 9.5 & Client Firewall 2.5].

Many thanks again for all your help it was much appreciated.

    Peter
