Sophos 7.6.1 uninstall error - ALsvc.exe does not exist

Hiall,

We would like to upgrade the Sophos from 7.6.1 to 9.0. However, there is an error when we uninstall the Sophos. Do you know how to fix it? Many thanks.

W2003 (upgraded from Win2K previous) connect to sophos_server1(in Windows 2003 platform).

Uninstall Sophos client and reinstall the Sophos but connect to sophos_server2(in Windows 2008 platform).

Most of our servers can do it successfully except a few machines. Your help will be highly appreciated.

  • Hi,

The software should be able to upgrade from 7 to 9 automatically.  It is essentially an uninstall and reinstall for all Sophos packages but it saves a manual uninstall and reinstall.

Based on the error though, It looks like the Sophos AutoUpdate uninstall routine, probably in an effort to remove the AutoUpdate service isn't finding the binary to unregister it.  I find it odd that the file isn't there however.  Is "\program files\sophos\autoupdate\" empty?  Or is it just missing this file.  I would think if you copy the alsvc.exe or the entire contents of the SAU cache directory if others are missing into "\program files\sophos\autoupdate\" the uninstall routine should work.  Not sure how it would get into this state though.

    I.e.

    Copy:

    \ProgramData\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\sau\program files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\*.*

    To:

    \Program files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\

And then re-run the uninstaller of AutoUpdate.  These paths are for Vista+. Please adjust to "\documents and settings\allusers\application data\" as required for the other OS.

    Thanks

    Jak
