Database Times out...........

I am running Sophos Enterprise Console on a Windows 2003 server (server has all MS updates applied and up to date).

Things have worked fine for the last few years.

All clients update etc fine. The only issue I have is when I try to enter the properties of a computer, or when I try to acknowledge/clean any errors/alerts with a workstation.

The Exterprise console freezes for a while, and then I get the following error:

The database operation has timed out.

The database can time out because it is under heavy load, because too much work is being attempted at the same time, or because there are network problems between the server and the database.

Im confused since the Enterprise console and the database are on the same server - so no problems there.

The server does nothing else except run Sophos Enterprise Console - so no issues with heavy load etc. Ive tried at different times during the day, even in the evening when no-one is on site, so I know it has nothing to do with the server under any load at all.

Task manager states everything is idle.

As I said, everything works fine - its just when trying to view properties of workstations, or trying to clear/remove/acknowledge anything.

I can even push a new install of Sophos out to workstations fine.

Any advice will be appreciated!

  • Hello Ifti,

are you unable to view the details of any computer or does it happen only for certain clients? I've seen something similar when clients generated zillions of alerts within a short time.

  • It happens with any computer or server.

The only way I can get it to work is to restart the server Enterprice console is running on. Even then, it will work for 20 mins or so, then stop working again?!

As I said, the server is used only for Sophos Enterprise console and its database, nothing else.

  • Ok, just to rule out the "simple" reasons - what's the size of your database and how many clients are managed by this server? If it has been running "for years" some debris might have piled up. Have you read the articles about database performance?

Have you tried to run reports - especially ones covering a longer period, the last year or so? Do they take very long?

  • Hi,

What version of SEC are you running?  The responsiveness of SEC 4 and SEC 4.5 is much improved in my opinion.

    Thanks
