What happens when I change the IP address of the Enterprise Server?

Hello,

I have been tasked to complete a Sophos rollout.  The Enterprise console and server were already setup when I came to the table, however the server was never given a static IP address.  For now, I've created a reservation in DHCP so the server's IP sill stay the same, but I would like to change it to the server IP block.

Has anyone ever changed the IP address of the server?  Hopefully the clients communicate via DNS to find the server.  I'll probably just wing it next week sometime, I mean what's the worst that can happen, I change the IP back to dynamic.

It would be nice to know if anyone has done this before, or if IP really matters and I can just make sure DNS is up to date.  There are roughly 500 clients already rolled out...

...Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Moltron,

please take a look at the articles returned by searching for mrinit.conf and FQDN, especially the one about "significant files and registry entries". I expect that (RMS) installation on the server correctly omits the IP-address if it detects that the server gets it's IP via DHCP when creating mrinit.conf and therefore the clients will use DNS to obtain the server's IP. As I don't have this setup I can't check.

Or you could wait for a more knowledgeable person to reply.

I any case - please report back

    Christian

  • Well, those files are using DNS names and not IP addresses.  Maybe I am in luck.  I think I'll be trying the switch later today, so I'll post my results.

  • Hi just to confirm that if you’’’’re using FQDN you should be ok. Not sure how your environment is setup but may be worth checking your Firewalls if your supporting remote sites. Ensure that the firewalls use using FQDN. I was unfortunate and we used IP address and that caused a few issues.

Sophos have a knowledgebase article 14635 that explains how and what to edit the mrinit.conf  I must stress I am no expert but hope this information helps. Cheers Simon

  • I made the IP address change and things went pretty well.  I did not have to make a change to the .conf files at all, just needed to reregister the DNS name for the server.

  • Please things went well. This firewall issues caught me out at first but relised it when everything else working inside the fire wall. I did forget to mention to ensure that you may also need to enable the prts that the Message Router uses, but as everything is ok, looks like you have done this. Pleased I could help.
