Sophos SavService.exe consuming high CPU (and possibly caused by TrueCyrpt).

I am using Sophos Anti-Virus, verison 7.6.20 on a Windows 7 Professional Machine (Thinkpad x100e).

I am also using TrueCyrpt (version 7, but the problem mentioned below happened under version 6.x).

In Sophos I have on acess scanning enabled.

In TrueCrypt I have created a number of volumes which are mounted as drives.

I find that with the TrueCrypt volumes mounted, Sophos SavService.exe starts running at the maximum percentage CPU it can (depending on the other programs running). SavService.exe will not stop running at maximum percentage of CPU, it can only be stopped by killing the process (it takes several times to kill it).

I work for a company, for which computer support is with a computer support company. The latter has been in touch with Sophos, but the responses have been (i) to uninstall Sophos, reinstall it; (ii) to set defaults (using support article 27213); and most latterly (iii) to stop using Truecrypt. I have done (i) and (ii), but neither has made any difference.

The latest suggestion that the use of TrueCrypt volumes is causing Sophos on-access scanning to constantly run, therefore I need to stop using TrueCyrpt. I am not a technical person, however, my understanding is that once a volume is mounted in TrueCrypt it is just another drive. To move to another encryption product will be a major amount of work on my part (or else just disable on-access scanning).

This has been going on for 6 months with no solution.

I wonder if another Sophos user can provide any suggestions/help?

Victor Warner.

(For the sake of completeness the problem also occurs with another machine, but which runs Windows XP SP3 Home.)
