Upgrading to SEC 4.0.0 in Windows 2003 SBS

I'm trying to upgrade to SEC 4.0.0 so that I can upgrade to SEC 4.5

I am running SQL 2000 in Windows 2003 SBS Server, this needs to stay as it is vital in running our in house software.

I can install SQL 2008 express no problem. When I try to install SEC 4.0.0 it starts to install SQL 2005 express, then it halts after saying scanning your computer configuration. A message then says "The wizard was interrupted before Sophos Enterprise Console  could be completely installed".

I tried to install SQL 2005 express on its own, the setup disappeared after saying scanning your computer configuration.

Here's an extract from the log after the SEC 4.0.0 install attempt:

InstallShield 14:47:18: CallScriptFunctionFromMsiCA() ends
MSI (c) (08!F4) [14:47:18:177]: Leaked MSIHANDLE (576) of type 790531 for thread 7412
MSI (c) (08:9C) [14:47:18:270]: NOTE: custom action SQLExp2005_Upgrade unexpectedly closed the hInstall handle (type MSIHANDLE) provided to it. The custom action should be fixed to not close that handle.
Action ended 14:47:18: SQLExp2005_Upgrade. Return value 3.
MSI (c) (08:88) [14:47:18:270]: Doing action: SetupCompleteError
Action 14:47:18 : SetupCompleteError.
Action start 14:47:18: SetupCompleteError.
MSI (c) (08:88) [14:47:18:270]: Note: 1: 2235 2:  3: ExtendedType 4: SELECT `Action`,`Type`,`Source`,`Target`, NULL, `ExtendedType` FROM `CustomAction` WHERE `Action` = 'SetupCompleteError'

Any Ideas? Need to get this sorted quite quickly as the end of the month is closing in.

  • Hi,

So currently you have SEC 4 installed and working pointing at an MSDE instance called SOPHOS?

There is also another SQL MSDE instance installed for another application on the machine?

If you download a SQL Express 2005 installer for your platform from: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx.

    32-bit installer http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65212

    64-bit installer: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=83387

If you run this and choose to show the advanced options (tick box), you should get to a page where it asks you to create or upgrade an existing instance. It will pre-fill the instance name with SQLExpress, if you change this to SOPHOS (if that's what your current instance name is) it should attempt to upgrade it. Does this work? If so you should be able to then install SEC 4.5. If not, what is the error?

    Regards,

    Jak

  • Thanks for your reply.

We are currently using SEC 3 with SQL 2000.

When I try to install SQL 2005 express, it gets to the system configuration check and then the setup box disappears and it ceases to install.

I can't get to the screen where I can select advanced options.

    Thanks for your help

  • Interesting, Ideally the full logs from that installation and the full logs from the Sophos install would be good. I can appreciate though that sharing what is probably megabytes of logs here isn't that easy.

You might be best making a quick call to support with those logs describing the behavior.

This article might be of use however:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229
    particularly section 2.

  • Thanks Jak!

Your last post pointed me in the right direction.

    Following the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910229

and looking at: 2.5 MSDTC Is Not Fully Enabled on Windows - tried to access Component Services and then clicked on My Computer, when I did that the window just closed.

This then led me to do a search and I found the following:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301919

I deleted the registry value that was stated (the server then did a forced restart :oS) I then followed the rest of the instructions through add / remove programs. Came up with an error first so I went through add / remove programs again. That fixed it!

I could then access component services and my computer menu and also could install SQL 2005 express successfully!

Thanks Jak for all your help, and I hope this helps someone else!
