Upgrade from Console 2.0 and EM 1.3 to V4?

Just found out that our AV was not updating due to it being out of date so just a few questions on an upgrade:

Can I just install V4 as an upgrade (i.e. not uninstalling the existing version) to the versions we have mentioned in the title?

How much extra disk space will the new version take as our drive that it is installed on has only 1.2Gb of free space (we only need to protect XP versions and the server 2003 itself)

If we do not have enough disk space on the current drive can I install it to another disk on the same server but still migrate settings etc and allow the same clients to connect to it without any further intervention?

Would I be better just uninstalling Sophos altogether due to space requirements and install brand new on the drive with more space (we do not have complex policies just if virus found delete etc). Would this require me to do anything with the client PC's or will they just be picked up by the new install and updated accordingly?

Sorry if these seem to be silly or simple questions but looked searched the site for answers and can't seem to see the wood for the trees! Information overload!

Thanks

  • Hello TechSupp,

you can't "jump" from SEC2.0 (you really have 2.0?) to SEC4.0. With SEC4.5 out soon you'd have to go through three upgrade-installs (2.0->3.1->4.0->4.5). And while you can put parts of the installation on a different disk it'd require some tinkering. Anyway I wouldn't try to upgrade with 1.2GB free (especially since you're probably not an "expert").

How many clients do you manage? If you can't get a new server and want to install the current version on the existing server it will probably take some time and depending on the SAV version you're using you might have to re-protect your clients afterwards.

I understand that you don't need to keep the policies as they are simple and can easily be recreated. What about the computer groups in SEC? If you have only a few and "re-assigning" your clients to these groups would be easy you could just start with an empty 4.x database (i.e. uninstall you old SEC and install the latest version). The question is if you want to keep EM (given it is 1.3 this should be possible) - on the one hand it requires some (extra) space on the other you probably want your clients to be up to date during the "transition".

We should probably discuss this further. Meanwhile, to alleviate the information overload, please see for important things to keep.

  • Thanks for the info, yes I am not an expert hence all the questions :smileyhappy:

Nothing is complex about out setup, single group set up for all PC's and simple policies

    • I do have one school on console 3.1.0 so first question can that just be an upgrade over the top (plenty of space on this server)
    • The other three schools are on 2.0 (we never get told about version upgrades untill something like this happens!) so I presume with the small server space I would be better off uninstalling the current versions and installing the latest.
    • Will uninstalling and installing the latest version cause me any work on the clients i.e. uninstalling the current one or will they just update to the latest version automatically when they update?
    • When is v4,5 due out as I see no point in going to 4 then to 4.5

    Thanks

  • SEC 4.5/Endpoint 9.5 (yeah, simply Endpoint) is coming soon according to Sophos' website and this usually mean a very few weeks. AFAIK there is no direct path from 3.1 to 4.5 but well, we'll soon see.

I never had any significant problems with upgrading but the replacement of EM with SUM is a major change and you should visit the upgrade center.

Will uninstalling and installing the latest version cause me any work on the clients

    Note the following points

    1. Export the Certification Manager registry keys - you need them later (this has already been mentioned several times here)
    2. Be sure your clients can be managed again after the install as you have to direct them to the new update location
    3. Test before if the clients can automatically update/upgrade to the new SAV/SESC/Endpoint( :smileywink:) version (see here - note that Protect Computers should work if it did before - and here) or that you can deploy Sophos from the console (= Protect Computers).

And while we are at it: Have you considered managing all four schools from one location? Ok, this will require touching the clients (uninstalling Sophos) as whoever installed the servers most likely hasn't known about these registry keys ...

  • The more I look at this the more complex it sees to be getting! Thanks for the reply. So much for the Sophos blub saying how easy it was to transfer from another product to Sophos, all I want to do is keep the Sophos I have running and it looks a nightmare!

    :3471
  • Right, had a look at the info and it seems like the best option would be to remove Sophos from the server and then install the latest version available. The servers last sucessfully downloaded updates at the end of May so thats after the January cut of time mentioned in your links so I should be able to just group the existing computers together and ask Sophos to Protect them as they should have downloaded the latest autoupdater. Please tell me if I'm off with my reading of the info so far.

  • It's not as complicated as it might look. You should check the SAV version on the clients updating from the SEC2.0 servers. If EM Library on the server stopped downloading they might be somewhat backlevel. Of course protecting them still should work (if you don't forget the Certification Manager keys).

While updating SAV/SESC (including version changes) is automatic from time to time you should upgrade SEC, let's see, once a year or so.

  • Please check are you using Control Centre v2 or Enterprise Console v2. There will be a big difference to the ease of upgrade.

Control Center (Small business product) can be upgraded direct from v2 to v4 as there is no v3 of the product.

Enterprise Console v2 upgrade would require a migration to v3 then v4 as v2 of this product is no longer supported and it is advised that you are within one version difference from latest release. Preferably on the latest release especially with all the good things v9.5 will offer our customers when it is released soon.

  • Thanks for all the replies, starting to see the wood for the trees!

    Checked and

3 schools are on Enterprise Console v2.0.0 and EM Library v1.3

and one school on Enterprise Console v3.1.0 with EM Library 1.3.2

So looks like I'll remove and install from scratch. Now about uninstalling, getting confussed about procedures for uninstalling versions etc.

Just read that I can basically just uninstall from the add/remove programs menu, right?

Also read about stopping certain things services, databases etc first but can't see if this relates to earlier versions?

What folders can I delete to get rid of the old CIDs etc after the install is complete?

    Sorry for the basic questions,

    :3477
  • Well first off the trees have got a little less and I can see the wood alot better now! :-)

To all those who offered advice thanks, I will probably be back!

Now the reason for the happy smile....the reason my Sophos stopped updating.....I had missed out changing the proxy setting when the council changed it early on this year...Doh! Did everthing else except Sophos. Put the correct setting in and away it went getting its latest it could from the servers! So imediate problem solved but still really need to get up to date. After reading many pages and suggestions etc and update guides it may be easier for most of my systems to upgrade them to v3 then v4 in simple upgrades insted of having to bite the bullet and do a complete new install (will save that for when we change the servers). Now I just have to get hold of the v3 upgrade that I missed.

    So once again thanks all.

  • Sorry to ressurect an onldish thread, but finally bit the bullet and installed from scratch the new 4.5 EM and all seems to have gone OK. Now once things have settled down and its confirmed all clients have updated etc what leftovers of the old installs can I delete to tidy things up, i.e. old CIDs, em 2 folders etc.without affecting the new em4.5 install or should I just leave all well alone if things are working OK?
