how to manually remove "PUA (i have no idea what that means) detected 'Spigot toolbar'" on my wife's windows10 pc?

i get an alert on my wife's pc - see subject above.

i am a computer user, 35 years, loved my Commodor 64, not a tech person so if the instructions are to techie i will wait until her pc has to be seen by a local tech.

it has windows 10 in portuguese installed of which i know little and us trying together to correct her pc must be hilarious to observe.

thanks for your interest

  • PUA is short for "Possibly (probably) Unwanted Application".   It is most often feeds you advertising in exchange for some "free" application that you downloaded.   Most of them will appear in your installed programs list and will uninstall cleanly.   Start with reviewing your installed programs list.   It may also work to check the Start Menu to see if you have an icon for the program and an icon for uninstall.

A google search on the application name will usually provide information, but I would only review the search results, not click on any entries.   Lots of people will offer to help you remove it for a fee when all of the legitimate sites will help for free.

Sophos also has a malware removal tool which will probably catch the PUA.   Download it from the support site.   Here is the link:

    thanks for the reply

the pest/virus does not appear in installed programs and when i do a search within windows it does not appear. the only indication of it is the sophos alert.

i have already tried the removal tool, results said ok but when i went to redownload sophos the alert was still there.

this problem, app, has been on her computer many months and does not seem to have done any harm.

i also did google searches with no luck.

thanks again for your interest. i had hoped that someone here had success removing it.

  • Hi David.

You can remove this toolbar by going to control panel > programs and features. From there locate the toolbar

and remove it. I would also recommend going into your web browsers and checking for any extensions, addons, search engines that may have been added.

Latest versions of Windows 10 can make the control panel difficult to find. Just search for it using the windows key and S. then type in control panel.
