Error message..Sophos Antivirus is not running

On my Macbook..which cannot run Mountain Lion...I keep getting an error message that says "Sophos AntiVirus Error..Sophos is not running".  I removed it and did a download of the non Mountain Lion version.  It immediately tried to update and failed.  So I did a manual update and now I'm back to the same problem.  It ran fine before the Mountain Lion updates.  OSX 10.7.5 running Sphos 8.0.8C which is the Mountain Lion version I believe.  On access scanner is off and I find no way of turning it on, I disabled the AutoUpdate, the Live Protection box is checked but grayed out.  So I don't know what to do.  If it keeps updating to the Mountain Lion version I'm really going nowhere.  Any ideas?

  • Same issue.  I have to reinstall Sophos and then it shows as running.  I notice when I do a clean out of cache that it occurs.

  • This needs an urgent fix. On reinstalling Sophos stops running and there is no pattern to this happening.

    Please update for 10.10.3

  • Same problem here since upgrading to Yosemite over the weekend.

The removal program for sophos is in your Applications folder, but is called something like "Remove Sophos Anti Virus" instead of "uninstall"  . . . so look in the Rs.

I'm trying remove and reinstall and will report back tomorrow if that works.

What is interesting is that when I reinstall, it says the download was SAV 9.2.2 (rather than the 9.2.3 or 9.2.4 that others have mentioned) . . . so I also told it to update again after installing the supposedly "new" copy . . . and NOW it says 9.2.4 . . . so make sure you update again after installing.

    I'm also on os 10.10.3

  • Can I ask what is the point of posting to this forum if the developer pays no attention to what is being said?

  • Pleased to hear it. So, when can we expect an update?

  • Can we please get some additional information.

Click on the icon in the tray and then Option-Click on About Sophos Anti-Virus. Please post your version (including what is within the brackets), detection engine, threat data version, and threat protection count. This will help us find out what version(s) you are seeing this problem in.

  • Home Edition version 9.2.4 (2482874)

    Threat detection engine: 3.58.1

    Threat data: 5.13

    Protects against 8903038 threats

Can't add much more except, as I reported above, App stops running.

As others are reporting same, issue has to be at your end.

  • It is a bit odd that no solution has been offered, given the adrenaline that tends to get going when one notices the X in the Sophos shield.

This happened to me a couple of months ago, and no answer was forthcoming. It happened now on a different machine, running 10.7 and version 9.2.4. Hoping to re-install, and unable to find the free version on the site, I got into a helpful chat with a staffer, who gave me a link. I downloaded it and ran the removal app on the existing installation. It hung up 2/3 of the way through. I tried deleting the remaining directories without any luck. So I did the re-install anyway, hoping it would replace any existing directories. It completed "successfully," so I ran the update. Back to exactly where I was before, seemed to be running OK.

And then, after several hours, the service stopped again. And after a while it restarted itself. If the staff or knowledgable people are actually tuning into this thread, I hope they have some explanation for why this behavior is occurring. Re-installing doesn't seem to resolve it, at least in this case.

  • Hey everyone,

Sorry about the long wait on this.

So I've just spent some time investigating, and it looks like this is a known issue. The good news is that we've got a fix in the works, and it should be included in the next release (9.2.6.) The less good news is that I'm not sure when that release will go out, but I'll hopefully have a firm date on this tomorrow. I'll update here as soon as I find out.

In the mean time, if you experience this issue, all you (usually) need to do is restart your mac. I know it's not the most elegant solution, but this should give SAV the jump start it needs to get going.
