Error message..Sophos Antivirus is not running

On my Macbook..which cannot run Mountain Lion...I keep getting an error message that says "Sophos AntiVirus Error..Sophos is not running".  I removed it and did a download of the non Mountain Lion version.  It immediately tried to update and failed.  So I did a manual update and now I'm back to the same problem.  It ran fine before the Mountain Lion updates.  OSX 10.7.5 running Sphos 8.0.8C which is the Mountain Lion version I believe.  On access scanner is off and I find no way of turning it on, I disabled the AutoUpdate, the Live Protection box is checked but grayed out.  So I don't know what to do.  If it keeps updating to the Mountain Lion version I'm really going nowhere.  Any ideas?

  • Well I tried something else and it may have worked.  I went to the site and downloaded the version that was NOT 10.8._.  You have two choices...choose the second one.  Download that.  Do the install.  Then you must restart your computer.  So far I haven't seen it again but I haven't been on that computer very much today.  Might be that the restart is necessary to reset something or another.  Now I need to admit that I'm not that sure of my steps.  I may have downloaded it and then restarted before I installed it.  Try it and see what happens.

  • When is this ever going to end!!!!

I got the "Sophos is not running" message when I rebooted my Mountain Lion iMac a little while ago. The answer according to postings here is to install 8.0.8.1.

I downloaded what turned out to be 8.0.8.1C and installed it. It will still not start. Same problem.

What is the story? This has been going on for different people since at least March.

I'll do without anti-virus I think. Sophos has only ever picked up a couple in several years and they were Windows.

  • The solution I posted for my macbook worked.  On my macbook Pro I had the problem briefly.   Not sure what I did but it's running 8.0.8C.  Haven't had the problem on either since.  Guess we just need to expect problems everytime Apple releases a new or update to an OSX.  Hope you solve your poroblem soon!

  • I have the same problem.

Console is recording these error messages repeatedly. Any ideas? Is it just an OS problem?

  • Started getting those error messages on my Mac Pro, Mountain Lion.  I had 8.x Sophos installed.  So I simply ran the de-installer they give you with the program and completely removed Sophos from my system.  Then I downloaded and installed the newest version, (at this writing, 9.0.3), and re-downloaded all the virus definitions.  It's up and running again.

  • I'm running Sophos ver. 9.2.4 and Yosemite 10.10.  Last few startups I'm getting the message that Sophos is not running.  Same problem on my wife's machine.  Read a lot of the posts but can't find the uninstall program.  Any suggestions?

  • I'm having the same problem which started right after allowing my Mac to update.  Now running OS 10.10.3 and Shophos 9.2.4.   Are they incompatalble?  Anyone?  Bueller?
