Firefox is giving me frequent "The connection was reset" messages - is Sophos not treating Firefox as a trusted application or similar?

Firefox often doesn't take me to previously visited sites right away, though it does when I retry the same URL. Started happening around the time I upgraded to latest Sophos AV. A web search indicated this is a sign of a browser not being trusted by AV or anti-malware software, but I don't see anywhere to tell Sophos what to trust or not trust.

Thanks!

  • Hi Ddoer,

I'm curious, are you using any other third party antivirus or firewall tools? I know some other users were having this issue with little snitch installed.

Also, have you taken a look at the SAV logs? You should be able to find those in Console.

    Cheers,
    Serra
  • Very much doubt his is related to Sophos. Seems to have come for me, and some others, I think, from one of the more recent updates. It's certainly happening for me, but not in a way that I would call "frequent." Maybe the 41 did it?
  • For weeks, I had been frequently experiencing "can't establish a secure connection", using mainly Safari, but also Opera. The web page would load eventually, sometimes taking several attempts.

My own web site (under development) had the problem most often, even though it was in the Allowed Websites list.

Googling suggested it could be my ISP, or even my Web Host.

I eventually found a reference that recommended turning OFF both options for Web Protection in Sophos.

I've not seen the issue once since doing so.

Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.1
    Safari 9.0.1
    Opera 32.0
    Sophos 9.4.0

No other ant-virus or firewall software installed.
  • For Month, I've got "The connection was reset" and "can't establish a secure connection" err in Firefox, 2-5 times in a hour.
I deleted SOPHOS and No err occured.
I'm using NO OTHER third party antivirus or firewall tools. Just Only Sophos for Mac.

    Thank you.

Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.1
    Firefox 42.0
    Sophos 9.4.0
  • Hi everyone,

We just released a new version of SAV (9.4.1.). I'm curious to know if you've noticed improved performance since the latest release?

    Thanks,
    Serra
  • When I forced an update yesterday morning at start-up, I noticed the upgrade to 9.4.1 but also noticed continued "The connection was reset" messages. That continued, though with less frequency, throughout the day. However, so far today there have been no such warnings. While time will tell, there does seem to be an improvement with the 9.4.1 upgrade.
  • I am still getting occasional "the connection was reset" messages on both Safari & Firefox
  • Did you read what we are saying? This problem happens on both Firefox AND Safari. It does not matter which you think is more secure, the problem is often having to click twice to get to a website
And did you click your own comment to make it best answer? Sad!
