Sophos 9.4 hanging on every scan

I have run Sophos Anti-virus on my Mac laptop several times now and every time it hangs half-way through the scan. From what I can tell, it is hanging on the exact same file each time. I get no message of any kind, just the progress bar showing how far along it is and the number of files scanned. I am running Yosemite on my Mac. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,

    does the scan progress view show any file name below the counter at the time it "hangs"? If it's a DMG file, please post the name or source for this file.

    Sophos slows down on
    jdk-8u60-macosx-x64.dmg files remaining 103998
    it seems to continually scan the same file although the number of files remaining goes down gradually.
    presently on 33833 then 20mins later 33025

    I have nothing added to my computer since Yosemite. This only started when upgraded to El Capitan.

    If I switch off scan inside archive and compressed files the scan completes.

    i'll have to run it again to get a complete list, but it the .dmg file for open office and google drive installer and maybe one or two other files.

    here are the handful of files i've been able to see as the scan starts to hang & repeat:

    apache_openo....en_US(1).dmg
    apache_openo....en_US.dmg
    apache_openo....en_US(3).dmg
    apache_openo....en_US(5).dmg
    educationsoftw...011mac2.dmg
    OOO-3.3.0_ma...stall_en_US.dmg
    installgoogledrive.dmg
    zotero_0411.dmg

    once it gets down to about 120K files left to scan, it'll start going through this list repeatedly.

    I am having the same issues I have four Macs all running El Capitan all freeze when approximately 75% of the way through the scan, I deleted sops and reinstalled and have the same issues.

    I have the same sort of problem. The scan stops everytime with around 250,000 files left to scan. It always stops on a .dmg file. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and tried changing the auto update settings.

    Please could you help?

    Come on sophos its been more than a month with no answers. Multiple users have said its an issue, and we've responded with the information your moderators have been asking for. Can't you give any kind of update?

    Hi, same problem. Scans never finish. I have tried on my main hard disk and just on attached standalone just to see but same problems. I am not too experienced on the but changing the scan settings does seem to have an effect but there is obviously a more basic problem here.

    starting with 9.4.0 we enabled scanning of "xar" compressed dmg files .Xar (short for eXtensible ARchive format) is an open source file archiver and the archiver’s file format. It was created within the OpenDarwin project and is used in Mac OS X for software installation routines, as well as browser extensions in Safari. Xar replaced the use of gzipped pax files.

    Scanning these dmg files can be an extensive process, since the complete dmg is extracted and inside files are scanned. Other
    timely scanning operations are dmg or archives containing java classes.

    For example: the JDK dmg can take up to 15 minutes to scan, depending on system resources.

    The scans most likely will finish. In order to speed up on-demand scanning the user can do one of the following things:

    a) disable archive scanning (not recommended)

    b) add an exclusion for dmg files, like *.dmg
