Ideas for new discussion groups

Hi,

before it starts to get chaotic i think someone should create some groups or subgroups like:

[Product ] - Installation and usage issues

or

[Product] - Need help...

In here you should make a sticky post with some basic details people should provide in order to get help (OS/Product/Error message etc...)...

Edit:

The following subgroups on a per product basis  may also help to improve the overview:

Feature requests

  • Hi JoeDoe,

Thanks very much for your interest in the SophosTalk community. Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, but yesterday was Launch Day, and we're still in the process of getting up to speed on lots of things. I think your idea is great. We'll set up a space to collect discussion topics, then drop in some ideas, and off we go.

    Best regards,

    spike

  • So - something didn't or doesn't work as expected. You think you have to remediate the problem immediately - no time looking for the cause. You do it on your own or you call support and they suggest a course of action. It might or might not work. Only then you realise that you've not only wiped out (almost) all forensic evidence but also can't recreate the situation. Embarrassing?

Let me give you two examples:

    1) When migrating to SEC 4.0 I started a remote console after the installation on the server had finished (I had logged off from the server as is always required but did not immediately login again). The library migration had (not unexpectedly) failed and the console presented me a pop-up which I clicked away expecting I could call it up again any time later. When I logged in to the server, opened the Console and did not find the "Retry migration" option it began to dawn on me that I'd dismissed the pop-up for good. Well - see above for the rest.

    2) While beta testing SEC 4 I managed to cripple autoupdate on a server . Neither me nor support gave any consideration to the fact that AU reported looking in vain for the CID for SAVNT. After quite some un-, de-, reinstall, installer cleanup activity and registry hacking the problem was eventually resolved. Last weekend I forced an unmanaged notebook to update from the webCID, it installed SAV9 but then - the red x! Guess you already reckon what I found in the update log. It didn't occur to me that I had already seen this and so I concentrated on resolving the problem instead of collecting the logs.

I assume that one or the other has had similar "experiences" and therefore I suggest a place for "occurrences, encounters and chimaeras".

  • Thanks for the forums, Sophos! And good luck!

One thing I would love to have here is a forum (forums?) dedicated to partner issues - not so much about _using_ Sophos, rather about _selling_ Sophos, and stuff around that. Not sure if it is in line with your vision of what SophosTalk should be but hey, wouldn't it make life easier for everybody? I am sure cluttering the general forums with partner-related issues would earn me a bad rep pretty quick here :smileywink:

  • Hi,

This is a great idea, and easy for us to set up. As you'll see, I've set you up with a little "P" icon that identifies you as a Partner. I can also set up a forum that's just for Partner discussions. Do you think this would need to be hidden from standard registered users? Let me know what you think. And thanks for the feedback.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks for the "P", I was wondering about that. Is there a straightforward way for a partner to get it? I tried to use my login from the Sophos Partner Portal but it wouldn't work so I had to create a separate one, and then of course I wasn't listed as a partner.

I vote for making the forum partners-only. That way, we can be more open, knowing that our discussion won't be there in the open for customers or competition to enjoy. Then again, it needs to be easy for partners to identify themselves as such.

  • Hi spike,

can I expect the partner forum to appear soon?

BTW I bet much more partners would join in if the forums got a decent link from the partner portal - currently, AFAIK, there is not a single mention of it there. I found out about the SophosTalk going live by accident, essentially - which is a pity considering how cool a feature it is.

    Hi Petr,

I'll try to set up the new forum over the next 24-48 hours. It will be visible only to known Partners. It will take a little while to work out the best method of linking our Partner records to membership of the SophosTalk community. In the meanwhile, any Partners reading this post should enable Private Messaging (see the FAQ at community.sophos.com/.../11) and send screen name and company details to me (spike). That way, I can easily add you to the Partners user group. I'll create a Partners-specific FAQ entry, too, to collect such process information in one place. Newsletter promotion of Partners is also about to go out, so the community should grow more quickly.

You're right about links from the Partner Portal. It's in the plans, but with product releases, work-to-date on SophosTalk, work on tools improvements and so on, it will be a little longer until those links appear. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Cheers,

    spike.
