The support, on Sohpos, just ignores queries, or lies about login issues. So ...?

  • OMG i am not even able to update to the downloaded Sophos UTM, 9.413, so i wasted more time???

How is a UTM, released before WannaCry, Free or Paid, SAFE?

I would think Sophos, not allowing an update, would also therefore, mean something either is being hidden, or has reason for lies??

  • As a home user the forum is your friend. Why haven't you updated to 9.5?

If you have scanning and IPS enabled you will be protected but not from stupidity.

Your post is a little over the top.

  • Not clear what you mean by "cannot update", so I am guessing.

I think there are some problems with Up2Date that may affect that version.   In this forum, click the KnowledgeBase link, then select UTM9, then search through the entries for the Known Issues List.  Download the pdf and review.  Last time I checked, it was missing entries that I thought should be listed, especially for the newest versions, but 9.411 data may be pretty complete.  Alternatively, search the forum for postings about Up2Date bugs.

Anyway you can download firmware updates from this link, and apply them manually, one at a time.

But the defenses for Wannacry were distributed as signature updates for IPS, not as firmwate changes.   Sophos has had some struggles with embarrassing bugs in recent versions, so I am content on my current version which is a little older than yours.  (I do not recommend updayi6ng to 9.5 at this time.) If you are getting signature updates, you can let go of the panic about Wannacry.

I have never been clear what updating services are included in the free home license.   Most of the value of the product is the internet knowledge database that they have built, even more than the code which utilizes that knowledge, and business users pay dearly to keep that information current.

You need to verify whether the home license includes all if the signature updates for all of the enabled features.  I think itprobably does, but you should be able to verify what is and is not free by using tbe (sales-oriented) chat window on the Sophos website.

Personal support is expensive, especially when you make a complex prodict available to home users.  So you do not get personal support.   But you can find lots of good material here, provided by business users and resellers.

No product is perfect, given that they are built by people like you and me.  Grace, extended to those who are trying hard to defend us against internet bad guys, is always in order, but especially for something that is free.

    Hello Alan,

As another contributor already stated, the protection for the UTM from WannCry and other vulnerabilities is issued through pattern updates. Pattern updates happen regardless of whether or not you are on the latest version. As long as you have it set the UTM to automatically update at Management > Up2Date and you have IPS enabled then everything is protected. We do recommend you always update to the latest version for bug fixes and new features, but the actual threat is protected against in your version. More information about the IPS protections against WannCry can be found here https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/126763.

In addition to having protection on the firewall, it is helpful but make sure you have client side AV Protection as well.  The Sophos Home Premium product is in beta right now and all beta users get one free year of Premium protection.  Check it out for yourself here at https://home.sophos.com/register/beta.

  • Agreed, rfcat_vk, a little over the top even though I did edit the profanity out of it.

Alan, you're welcome here, but we won't tolerate flaming or profanity.  Attacking Sophos practices and products is allowed, but not individuals that participate here.  Hopefully, you'll discover that the UTM Community is a tremendous place to learn and to get help solving problems.

    Cheers - Bob
