Mini-ITX Atom MB

Has anyone tried building an Astaro firewall based on Intel's D945GCLF motherboard and Atom Processor combination (see Newegg ad here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121342)?

I'm trying to figure out how to build a low power (80W) unit using this combination, in conjunction with a PCI-based NIC card.

    I missed the "delivery charges" on my bill; incremental cost of electricity is actually $0.28 / kWh

    So that's about $75 for 30watts.

    Ouch, yeah, that's a lot to pay a year for 30w of electricity.

    there is another thing in those mini-itx systems... ups!

    before i had compaq 19 inch rack mounted servers all fed by a couple big ups systems. those were big boys to keep those servers running.

    after my project `small box' i only have mini-itx servers with just one ups to feed them all... this also is saving me energy and battery replacement costs!

    lower energy, lower noise levels, lower heat and smaller foot print.

    We just got a couple of these (Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz, 65nm), initial tests show that they idle around 90w without Cool'N'Quiet. Haven't had a chance to run full tests yet, but I expect them to idle around 60w (it would be better if we were using better PSUs, but this was a budget upgrade).

    OK, built two of these with BIOSTAR TForce TF8200 A2+. One is running Fedora 9, the other Vista Pro.

    At idle with CnQ on, they draw about 45-50w from the wall (and this is with old, non 80plus PSUs). Without QnQ on, they draw about 80w from the wall. With both cores going 100%, they draw about 120w from the wall.

    Systems are using onboard video, GigE nic and a 7200rpm IDE or SATA drive.

    I think that with a high efficiency PSU idle power draw would drop to 40w or less.

    Well the little system in my sig is using a horrible old PSU which isn't 80+ or anything, and draws 45-50W idle, peaking only in the 60s. But CPU usuage graph in ASG is under 5% most of the time, so the idle is much more interesting.

    It's pretty cheap and could be cheaper, the Antec case was £60 but I actually used it for the previous P3 system (more like 60W idle). The dual port ethernet I picked up on ebay for about £8, the motherboard cost me £52 shipped I think, and the hard drive and RAM I also got on ebay for low money, so all in all £150 could replicate the system, doubt I'd get a VIA system for that. It's not the smallest or lightest system, but it is quiet with a few fan mods and works great.

    Shuttle has an Atom system which is apparently fanless, and has a Marvell 88E8056 gigabit ethernet NIC. It doesn't have any expansion slots though.

    Does anyone know if this NIC is supported, and if it supports VLANs in Astaro? (it's not in the HCL)

    Marvell 88SE61xx Realtek 8111C = not supported.

    I thought Marvell and Realtek were different... Anyway, I got a Asus P5Q-WS mainboard to support my Intel Quad Pro/1000 NIC and the onboard NIC's aren't picked up.

    Not sure if these NIC's are the same as yours but thought the information useful.

    What do you think about these two atom mainboards with dual lan and passive cooling? Are they well supportet by Astaro?

    The official answer on those two MSI systems is that they are unsupported.  See the HCL (http://www.astaro.com/lists/HCL-ASG-V7.txt) for supported systems.

    That does not mean you can't get it to work, but it does mean you are on your own for hardware issues at this time.

    Well, of course you are right. But are their any experiences with the GBit NICs Intel® 82574L or Realtek® 8111C. Which one would you like to recommend? The Atom CPU looks to work fine, and i am looking for an energy saving Appliance without fans ;-)

    I'd recommend the Intel NICs over the RealTek; they're more likely to work, and work better, and for $20USD it's worth it.

    That said, I don't work for Astaro and don't know for sure if that Intel NIC is supported.
    If you wanted to do some research and find out what Linux driver and version it needs, that would probably make it clearer.

    FWIW, I'm not too fond of the Atom boards right now; the CPU sounds great but Intel is only selling it with a desktop chipset which uses ~23watts alone. I've probably already ranted about this though.

    Let us know if you get one of these. The price ($184 at LogicSupply, out of stock) looks good compared to a lot of the VIA stuff.
