How to change Wan Ip address before activation with console ?

Hi all,

I try to install the beta on a new virtual datacenter (vmware).

There is no dhcp on wan interface ... When i tried to change ip of Wan interface... no way ...

I can t have access to web interface.

What i ve done :

log into the console: menu 1 (network configuration) => 1 Interface Configuration then try to give the config... For the first interface : no problem you can change the ip.

For the second interface (wan), it bypass the menu to enter ip ...

I only tried with beta 1 because no iso or vmware image of full beta2.

Is it a bug ? or i don t find the right way to change the wan ip from console

  • Do you plan to give a solution to configure Wan Ip interface in console ? not in http/https ?

For Appliance, there is no need but for Virtual Appliance deployment, it's in some times the only way to activate the product ...

For now, the only way i found, deploy another virtual firewall (pfsense) and give dhcp and  access to internet to XG virtual machine ... I don't think that customer will like this method :)

  • HI Mattieu,

We do support IP address change from console but for this case before activation by default DHCP is enable in WAN interface and that's reason you are not able to change it.

We will forward this feedback to Product Management team to have option to bind static interface from CLI.

  • I agree with adding the ability to assign an IP address to an interface via CLI.  without this, I am unable to access the virtual appliance via web interface...that assigned address does not match my host network.

  • Hello ZaneDonaldson, Did you get a solution for this?

Sophos Firmware Version SFOS 16.05.5 MR-5

I have same problem with the above firmware version. I cannot access the webadmin because of my 2 NIC's are not configured properly.

NIC 1(Port 1): LAN - 172.16.16.16 -> I tried changing this by following the documentation, but no luck because i couldn't set the subnet mask.

NIC 2(Port 2): WAN - It got an IP Address from the DHCP server. however, Gateway was set to "128.0.0.1" because of this i could access the device through webadmin.

Please suggest if you have any idea on this.

    Thanks, Srikanth

  • Hi SrikanthMergu , You may set the Subnet from the console.

option 1, press enter until you see an option to set the IPv4 address., press 'y' to change . Enter the host address desired and change the subnet . This is not applicable for port 2 as its WAN and by default set to DHCP. You may change from the UI.

You may refer the kb article https://sophos.com/kb/126209 for steps to access and register your device.

You may also access the XG device via WAN  and assign the host address via DHCP. To check the address assigned to Port 2 you may use the following command on the console.

Option 4 :console> show network interfaces

Check the host address of Port 2 and execute another command

    console> system appliance_access enable

Access the device using  https://<WANIP on Port 2>:4444

After accessing the device you may go to Administration> Device Access> Enable WAN for Https.

disable the command using the console.

    console> system appliance_access disable

You are good to go. These steps would allow you to access the device from WAN and assigned by DHCP. So any system in the same network would access this device and manage it.

  • Hello Sneha

It's been 2 years now, is there any feedback on this? As far as i see, it's still not possible to change WAN interface from DHCP to static within the console.
