SMC 5 - List of Actions that require the SMC app?

Hi,

When using SMC 4, certain actions where only supported when the SMC mobile app was actively running.

However in SMC 4, I thought I could at least Lock a device using the backend WebUI without requiring the SMC app to be running?

This doesn't seem to be the case anymore!? - When I try to lock a device, and that device doesn't have the SMC mobile app running, the task just sits there in the backend WebUI with a status of "delayed".

QUESTIONS:

Q1. Have the task requirements changed in SMC 5?

Q2. Which of these tasks in SMC 5 require the SMC mobile application to be actively running? - This question goes to both iOS and Android OS.

  • Decommission
  • Install App
  • Locate
  • Lock
  • Refresh
  • Reset password
  • Send Message
  • Transfer Profile
  • Wipe

The reason why I ask is that if there is a problem with the SMC mobile app running or communicating with the backend, then this simply cripplies the management and security of the devices, and therefore defeats the whole MDM purpose. In other words - 'Control' becomes 'Control Zero'

Thanks,

John

  •  Hi RL,

For Mobile Control 5, the SMC app is initially required for provisioning any iOS device.

The reason is that once the app is pushed to the device, it calls back to the server to push the APNs information to the iOS device, and install the MDM profile.

The process has been integrated and streamlined to make the complete suite of MDM layers installed on the device in one install process, rather than executing multiple tasks like previous versions of Mobile Control did.

That being said, if you do not want the Mobile Control app on the iOS device, it can be removed but it does come with limitations.

Compliance rules can be more difficult to enforce. Recommended/Required applications have to be pushed manually from the server, rather than the user requesting the push from within the app. You lose the ability to locate the device via GPS.

Actions like remote lock/wipe, password reset, ect.. will still work.

The SMC app is required for Android installations.
