Apple Configurator 2 and Sophos Mobile Control 5 and VPP

Hi there,

I installed the new apple configurator 2 on my MacBook and the mess started: From that moment on I needed a VPP-Account, even when I distribute only free apps. OK, Registration on the apple-site, created vpp-account and after some days I was able to use the apple configurator 2 to make a preconfiguration of my iPads. Without a vpp-account I couldn't start an app distributed to the iPads without entering an appleID. With the new setup I can distribute my apps to the iPads and start them without entering an AppleID like it was before with the apple configurator (1).

Now I have iPads configured with the new apple configurator 2 and I manage them with SMC 5.x. When I distribute an app (for e.g. citrix receiver) OTA with the SMC, the app is installed on the iPads but when I start the app I have to enter an appleID. Even when I entered the VPP-Account in my SMC-Server.

So I see an incompatibility of SMC with the new apple configurator 2 and devices that are preconfigured with it. Anyone else here with the same problem and maybe a solution? Bad timing for that problem, we were one step away from the finish line.

cheers

  • Hi Detlef,
I found a similar question on the Apple site that may be able to help you...from the Apple forum:

"I had a similar problem when I updated to Configurator 2.  I resolved the issue by "purchasing" all the apps through the Volume Purchase Program which then allowed Configurator 2 to install them without requiring an Apple ID each time.  This applies to free apps as well as paid apps.  Just be sure in Configurator 2 you are signed in using the proper VPP account in the STORE tab.

Configurator 2 then assigns licenses of each app (even the free ones) to each iPad.  Be sure to "buy" enough licenses of the free apps to cover your fleet of iPads"

  • Hi Paul,
I tried that but it did not help. Support told me that the AC2 uses some new features of iOS9 that are not implemented in SMC5 but in SMC6. So I will wait for SMC6 and hope that my problem will be solved then.
