Sophos Enterprise Console 4.5 setup has detected that the SOPHOS (...) is running on MSDE 2000 SP3

Hi guys,

I am trying to do the upgrade from Console 3.1 to 4.5 and from SAV 7.6.21 to 9.5, on a SBS win 2003 SP2. I have used the Upgrade Advisor Wizard and followed the instructions, but  I've got to the point where only says to install the Enterprise Console 4.5 and follow the instructions from the wizard. Well the installer throws the message in the subject.

Also I managed to install the Console 4.0.2 and when I use the SEC comes with the following message:

EM Library is still running in the updating hierarchy. Is is recommended that you migrate all your updating settings to Sophos Update Manager.

How do I do that?

I have also installed SQL Server 2008 SP3 but noticed that the SEC has installed SQL Server 2005...

What should I do?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

SEC 4 requires at least a SQL Express 2005 instance (default install) where as SEC3 was OK with MSDE and it was the default.  So any MSDE instance being used by SEC 3 should be upgraded to SQL Express 2005 as a minimum.  By default if you install SEC 4 over SEC 3 which is using a SOPHOS named MSDE instance it will upgrade it to SQL Express 2005.  That sounds like it has happened which is good.  You don't really need the SQL 2008 Express instance you have.

Note: If you install a fresh install of SEC 4.5 it would install a SQL 2008 Express Sophos instance but any upgrades from SEC 4 (using SQL Express 2005) would not be upgraded to the newer version of SQL Express.

I think there is a bug in the Upgrade Advisor which suggests that you might need to manually update to SP4 of MSDE before upgrading but this appears not to be the case:

If you are now at 4.0 and you can open SEC, I would suggest closing SEC and upgrading to SEC 4.5 before configuring SUM.  This should be quick, as there are no updates to SQL as mentioned above.

Essentially with SEC 3 EMLibrary was the component that downloaded and managed the packages and distribution locations.  Starting with SEC 4, Sophos Update Manager (SUM) was introduced to replace EMLibrary.  That's not to say you needed to replace it straight away as EMLibrary and SUM will co-exist.  The idea being that you can configure the new SUMs to create the new update locations and once ready start to use them in the new style updating policies.  For basic installations of EMLibrary the system can migrate the configuration of the EMLibrary into a new SUM configuration but it might be simpler just to start configuring the SUMs from scratch, create the distributions, create the new updating policies and link them to the SEC groups.  Once done you can retire the EMLIbrary components.

Packages are now wrapped in subscriptions if you like, so you choose the different version of SAV within the subscriptions and give that a name, you then assign that to a SUM and it will create you distribution points with those CIDs in them,
