Management Service Connection Failed

We just moved our sophos45 msde db to our sql 2008 server. When we try to start the management service it fails, stating unspecified error. In the event log we see the following:

Initialization failed.

Step: Creating a database connection

Error: std::runtime_error

Data: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (ParseConnectParams()).]Invalid connection.

We have gone through Distributed Enterprise Console installation error 'Could not start the Management Service... 0x80004005: Unspecified error' but that has not helped our cause. We tested the connection with a UDL file and we are able to connect to the DB as expected. Any ideas?

Correction - SEC4.5 does not support MSDE. Anyway you should check or modify the DatabaseConnectionMS value. Sounds like some small and almost unnoticeable typo (especially when the test with the UDL succeeds). If it is correct and the problem persists I'd suspect "something" you've typed in. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
