anit-virus not running/LoadVirusData failed

After having a pop-up window appeared on my Mac OSX 10.7.5 indicating "Sophos Anti-Virus Error/Sophos Anti-Virus is not running", I updated just in case (now Home Edition 9.2.2, Threat Detection Engine 3.55.0, Threat Data 5.07)) and tried doing a scan.  Almost immediately (i.e., not nearly long enough for a real scan) the report was "No Threats Found/Issues Detected".

SCAN LOG showed this:

Immediate scan started at 2014-10-24 20:22:01 -0600

New volume detected at /
Unable to initialize threat detection engine: virus data missing or unusable.

Immediate scan aborted at 2014-10-24 20:22:01 -0600.

ALL MESSAGES showed a continuous repeat of this sequence:

Anyone else have this problem?

  • I have the same problem as Sinkleaf. I am running OSX 10.9.5 on a MacBook Air (4 GB RAM).

My version of SAV is: Home Edition version 9.2.2, Threat detection engine: 3.55.0, Threat data 5:07

First noticed the issue when the error message that SAV stopped working popped up. Tried manual update, which seemed to complete normally.

Attempts to scan my hard drive ran suspiciously fast and reported "no threat detected" but "issues encountered"

Logfile shows currently repeated instances of the following

    com.sophos.intercheck: Info:    ic_worker_start: kext already loaded at 21:45 on 09 November 2014

  • Ping...

Any  update on this?  Seems pretty serious.  I'm having the same problem. ("Unable to initialize threat detection engine: virus data missing or unusable.")

Related: i found this while trying to understad why the Sophos Shield had an X over it and was greyed out (maybe it's always greyed out - not sure).  Also found that the "on access" scan was off and could not be turned on.  Not sure I'm getting much benefit from Sophos at this point...

    :1019957
  • True enough...

not getting any protection from Sophos at this point :(

Has anyone tryed to un-install the Home edition, and start over with a fresh install? And does it remedy the problem?

    Sophos are you listening?

I appreciate the unintrusive ways of your software, but if it is no longer working (for possibly a small reason we are not able to figure out...), I need to be looking elsewhere.

    Any advise much welcomed.

    :1019958
  • Yes!!! The routine in above link solved my problem :)

    Thank you Sandy!

    :1019965
  • Hi,

This solution works, but I have to apply it every couple of days. The problem simply comes back, and when I apply the terminal solution, it goes away again... until it comes back a agin a day or so later.

I use a MacBook (early 2013), latest version of Yosemite (10.10.1), Sophos home edition 9.2.2.

    Cheers,

    Frank

  • Same has happened on my Mac. I'm not techi at all so very worried that I no longer have Sophos protection.
