Unable to uninstall virus removal tool

I want to upgrade the free Virus Removal Tool but I cannot uninstall the existing version. When I run the uninstaller I get "Error 1606: Could not access network location data." I can't reinstall the old version either, for the same reason. So I'm stuck!

HELP!

  • Hello vadek,

    When I run the uninstaller

there is AFAIK no separate uninstaller - did you use Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs)? If so, then maybe the specific folder named RarSFXn  is missing from your user's TEMP directory. As outlined here there's a registry key involved (the full path is HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\711E92...\SourceList\\LastUsedSource).

While removing this key should not have any adverse side-effects (assuming the "old" version isn't too old) it's better to create the LastUsedSource folder and extract (using e.g. 7zip) the .msi from the old version to it. With this you should be able to uninstall.

  • I used Programs and Features, or whetever the Vista equivalent is. I'm a long way away from my computer right now, but I've removed every trace of the Sophos product that I can find -- manually. So I've probably missed a few bits.

I'll check out the specific registry key you mention as soon as I'm back home. I only just received notification of your post, a few days after it was posted. And the forum refused to accept the email address I'd changed as my main ID, which confused me no end and gave me grief trying to log in.

Stand by for final result in a couple of days. I'd like to reinstall the Sophos Virus removal tool if I could, but I don't like weird errors when I install or uninstall it. I hadn't done anything weird to warrant the error. I'm a simple person with simple needs. :-)

EDIT: the forum won't let me change my email address. When I enter my new address twice as requested it says they don't match. If I cut and paste one to the other it says they don't match. I give up. I hope I never have to post here again. :-(

  • I am having the same problem as you. It doesn't work and when I try to uninstall it, I can't.

  • Hi Sandy,

I do apologize to you regarding this problem. I did manage to download the Sophos anti virus program, but when I tried to use it, I received that error 1606. I tried it a few times with the same results. I then tried to uninstall it as I was very frustrated with what was happening. Obviously this program is not meant for Windows 8.1 home computer  use. This is what I think anyway. Now I can't uninstall the program. What a pain this has been for me. Any thoughts?  Loretta
