Eratic behavour

I recently downloaded and successfully installed the Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition. I have run the program and it reported a number of corrupt files (all mobile documents). It also reported around 8 or 9 threats which I chose to Cleanup which it did fine. All seems fine except that I now have one issue which I am not sure what to do about. Access to some web pages in either Safari or Firefox is now erratic and Safari reports messages like “Safari can’t open the page “https://webmail.1and1.co.uk because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “webmail.1and1.co.uk”.” Firefox reports a similar message. If I retry and perhaps even restart the apps it sometimes goes through OK. It is not consistent and not on all web sites. Can anyone help me please as it appears as though I may have inadvertently removed/cleaned up a required file as all was working fine before the running of the app.

I am running an iMac 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB RAM and using OSX 10.9.5
The version of Anti-Virus I am using is Home Edition 9.4.0, Threat Detection Engin 3.61.0 Threat Data: 5.19

    My boss and I have been experiencing the same issue and we have had Sophos installed on our computers for several years. The problem started last week. I'm using Mountain Lion, she uses Mavericks. Same erratic behavior with both Firefox & Safari, same error messages.

    Sometimes the website will connect and then a short time later it won't work and I get the error message. Finally I entered one address in Preferences as an Allowed Website just so I could get my work done.

    Hi Erica, If you have had this software running for a number of years with no issues and you have only just started to have these problems, the it makes me wonder if it is another issue that is causing the problems. The question is what?? I thought I had solved it by turning off "Block access to malicious web sites" in preferences but it has made absolutly no difference. HELP ANYONE.

    Erica. I put up the same questions to the Apple Safari forum and got a couple of very interesting answers. Apparently the problem is caused by Sophos itself and uninstalling it should sove the problem. This has worked for me but it's early days yet.

    The anti virus software is the culprit.

    Follow the instructions for uninstalling Sohphos > How to remove Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac

    Gatekeeper is pre installed on your Mac to prevent malware.

    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.

    Make sure Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

    OS X: About Gatekeeper

    Anything else is overkill on a Mac.

    First, sorry to hear you are having issues. I'll try to answer everything in this thread but let me know if you have other questions.

    Jeff: you mentioned you tried turning off web protection and it didn't make any difference. I'm curious if you tried turning off "Live Protection," and if that made a difference?  

    Erica: When you entered the websites into the "allowed websites," did that resolve your issue?

    Both of you: Is this issue still ongoing? And have you noticed if there particular websites that have issues, or did it seem to be affecting most / all websites?

    Also, taking a look in the logs could also be helpful. Here's a video that will walk you through the logs. If you could take a look and let us know if there's any info there, that would be helpful.
