AP10 performances

Well this thread here express very similar views (sluggish 1,5 mbps on AP10 - 5 to 6 mbps on NETGEAR):

and that's 2 years ago.. Ahh makes me bang my head i haven't searched performances issues on AP10  before ordering the device. Not very happy about this though... I hardly think my reseller will take anything back...

AP10s work very well if configured correctly. Netgear APs will always work better than commercial grade AP. Netgear APs require remote access to manage, Sophos APs don't.
I have a number of APs around my home and all offer upto 65mb/s throughput as they are designed to. An AP30 will give greater that 72mb/s throughput.

Now in all your posts, you have not provided any screen shots of your AP configuration. Please do so before being so negative.

Thanks for your reply and sorry i didn't wanted to sound negative. Though the facts are there the device i've paid 5 times less than the AP10 is performing 5 times better. I'm honestly a little sour at observing/explaining that.

I'll post my AP10 configuration but honestly their ain't much of a wizardry in any of the UTM wireless protection configuration pane's i've crawled through...

So as said, here are the facts... Again i'm disappointed by that enterprise class device. 
Image #4 is transfer with AP10 while image #5 is transfer with NETGEAR.

while your figures prove your point, you haven't provided the configuration of the netgear AP. Also you don't appear to have a country in your configuration.
Further, I am not sure about client isolation what affect that has on performance, I don't use it.
How is the AP10 connected to the UTM?
How is the wireless card on the laptop configured? 


Again this update is being done through an AP10 using v9.202-28.

I have never been able to get more than 72mb/s connection even though the advertised performance is 150mb. AP 30 and AP50 I get a maximum of 144mb/s. Everyone is waiting for the fix to the AP50 so you can get 300mb/s.

Yes sorry i forgot to mention that i've been doing some mspaint editing hiding stuff in the pictures i thought would be irrelevant or linking to personal informations.. So that is why you dont see many inputs in a few fields but they're there indeed [:D]

That being said, on the NETGEAR device i'm really not doing anything special, the only thing I've enabled is called WMM and that helps on the performance that's sure...

The last image attached now is from the appliance i'm running now, IPFire 2.15 core 77 with an internal WiFi card PCIe sloted (hostapd/802.11gn) in an APU1C sysboard. Thaaa well i think i ain't gonna look back... let see i like to play with things but it seems we're in two different leagues here..

I looked at the ipfire specifications, it is not in the same league as Astaro.
If it provides you with features you want go for it, but remember it is a very limited firewall function wise.

Your configuration of the netgear was slightly different to the ap10.
It is not clear to me what is wrong with your configuration, but I can download large files over the wifi, but I don't recommend it, not a reliable medium for that. If you want large file transfers then a cable is the only reliable way to go.
At work even with the magic Cisco stuff, we try to put all regular large file users onto dedicated cable links because the wifi is not reliable enough.

Ian thanks a lot for your help !!! Yes i know about the large files transfers and really it is simply a matter of testing the possible throughput more than anything else.. 

Sure, IPFire does not offer all the features of UTM that is clear, there's a bunch of things i'll miss from Sophos but at the end i'm having one device which performs very well and from which i think the security level is at least at Sophos level.

An update concerning this matter - I've found a pretty cheap AP50 (cheap for an AP50) for sale and i'm very pleased with the results honestly... See for yourselves..

So my advise would go for considering the AP50 and to forget about the smaller devices...

And i'm back on Sophos because i just really like it [:D]

Welcome back. I have an AP50 which I am very happy with, though we (AP50 owners) are waiting for a software fix to improve the speed of the AP50. Speed also improves if you can disable some of the legacy features on the local laptops. I tried, but the wireless printer only does 2.4ghz using an older mode.
