Will Lantronix xPrintServer solve Airprint problem?

If broadcast/multicast protocols are not necessary, it may be possible to solve this with static DNS entries for the print device(s).

Another option would be to move the printer to the hotspot network, and give it a long-life login token.
You'll probably have to give it a static IP, and use a laptop on the same IP (first) to enter the token. You might also have to spoof the printer's MAC address on the laptop.

From what I understand Bonjour will not work across subnets. Thus a printer cannot service both LAN and WLAN unless they are on the same network.

If we bridge them on the same network then the hotspot functionally is disabled.
In my application I would like to have "mid tier" users that have limited functionality on the LAN.

Aerohive has a "Private PSK" function that enables each user to have their own access code. These enables layers of control with one SSID. This solves the Airprint problem and seems to be a better solution then hotspot vouchers.

Wish I could build the same into Sophos?

Here is how you can get the Lantronix xPrintserver to work across subnets.

In our environment, we have majority of the printers on one internal subnet.  We have our IOS devices located in a DMZ subnet outside of the Sophos UTM.

Suggest purchasing the Lantronix xPrintServer 'Office Edition' for the added extra features like backing up your configuration and AD integration.

Step 1
First install the xPrintServer (xPS) on the same subnet as the printers and let the xPS discover and build a printer inventory.  We have over 100 laser/copiers in our network.  The xPS generates a lot of broadcast traffic during the discovery process and will periodical rediscovery the print devices.    During the discovery process, the xPS will inventory the printer IP's on the internal network.

Step 2
After you are satisfied that most of the printers are discovered, move the xPS box to the IOS device network subnet.  Now on the UTM, define the necessary firewall rule to allow the xPS to communicate to your printers (tcp ports: 9100, 515, 161, etc).

Step 3
Have found this step is the most time consuming process.
You will need to review your printers in the xPS web management portal.  Update the printer's Description and Location so IOS device displays the way you what your IOS users to see the printer list.   Check print resolution (so not 300/600 dpi), duplexing, paper size, etc.   Should test each printer.

You can also manually add new printers which for example may be on remote subnets.

Step 4
After satisfied with the xPS configuration and finished testing, save the xPS configuration under Admin->Save/Restore in case the config gets wiped out.

This setup has worked out very well for us. We only have about a dozen or so iPads concurrently in use.  But they need to print access through out the organization.  Lantronix recommends load balancing about ten printers per xPS but are print volume is very low.
