Just tried icloud-notes-linux-client and discovered that new https exceptions were required.

Hi Folks

Last night, I discovered the rather cool package called icloud-notes-linux-client (I installed it via snap) and after starting it up, it [of course] refused to connect to the Apple server, despite me already having the below 3 exceptions in place:

  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?apple\.com/
  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?icloud\.com/
  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?mzstatic\.com/

So, once I again used that super-handy pcap and Wireshark trick (as detailed at https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/134286) to see where it was attempting to 'call home' to and I discovered 2 new (to me) domains being hit, and after adding the below exceptions to my existing list...

  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?apple-cloudkit\.com/
  • ^https?://([A-Za-z0-9.-]*\.)?cdn-apple\.com/

...all was once again rosy in the garden, as they say (albeit a walled garden, of course). The icloud-notes-linux-client is billed as being a notes client, but it happily showed all of my photos (and it permitted me to download the ones that I wanted onto my Debian laptop) so thus far, it looks like it might occasionally be moderately useful. It also enabled me to see my contacts and my calender (which is quite handy) and although there is also an e-mail section, it would appear that it only shows e-mails from an icloud account (I didn't have one, but I created one and it does seem work; the welcome e-mail showed both on my iPhone and on the Linux client) so though it's of limited use, it's still moderately amusing that it even works at all.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd post this in case anyone else performs a future search for 'icloud-notes-linux-client ' and 'broken' or 'unable to connect' (or the likes) as adding that last exception enabled me to log in and complete the 2FA procedure. As to the client, one of my CPU cores is sitting at 100%, but I've only tried it briefly and I suspect that it has to synchronise, so I'll leave it running for a while and see if it all settles down.

Kind regards to all,

Briain :-)
