Why was this outbound pop3 email flagged as spam by the UTM?

The following was flagged as SPAM by the UTM.

This was an original (not a reply) email being sent outbound via pop3 from an Outlook client to a Cox email server.  For some reason the Sophos UTM thinks it was SPAM.

The body of this short message was just saying thanks to a friend who had stopped by the sender's place.  There was nothing else in this email.  No ads.  No attachments.  Nothing.

No other outbound messages were being stopped.

What am I missing here?

  • Eric, I don't think that email goes outbound via the POP3 Proxy.  My guess is that this is an inbound email to someoneelse, not an outbound email from firstperson.  Anything else in the email header or POP3 logfile to help clarify?

  • Hmm, I've had a similar situation...

I have Exchange 2010 Back end that forwards email to the UTM, this was blocking legit emails OUTBOUND to the person, it considered it bulk spam but this email was neither bulk nor spam.

I've had to put exceptions in place to prevent this happening but is totally unacceptable.

On another note, also had UTM blocking its OWN notification emails!!! citing "Unscannable" as the reason.
  • Shoey, it sounds like you have a misconfiguration or two.  Please start a new thread about those block, showing the lines from the SMTP log file for a blocked legit email and for a notification.
