How to resolve a history of poor updating - Up2Date is of no use currently

Question

I am looking at a UTM with a poor history of updates being applied, an alert for low space on the root partition ( Root partition is filling up - please check). While Up2Date was able to install some updates recently, it is no longer offering any through the GUI. 
 Is it now on version 9.358-3; which I believe is the last of 9.3 and the next version is 9.404-5.... I think. At this point, because the GUI is not offering any more updates, I think that means either 
 (a) the root partition is too low on space and I should follow the steps here to DELETE the contents of /var/up2date/sys and then run a manual update and continue using Up2Date in the GUI 
 OR 
 (b) to move from any 9.3 to any 9.4, there is a special step which is not available in the Up2Date options in the GUI and needs to be done by command line 
 I think (a) is correct, can anyone confirm please?

This is resolved now, and the steps described at https://wandersick.blogspot.com/2016/06/resolving-root-partition-is-filling-up.html were all that were needed. 
 Confirmed by phone with Sophos support; and updates took a few reboots to install, but all are completed now.

Hi, Dededo, and welcome to the UTM Community! 
 Rather than follow that guide, read it through to understand what needs to be done and then do the following: 
 
 Set 'Firmware Download Interval' to "Manual" in WebAdmin. 
 # cd /var/up2date/sys 
 # ll 
 Pick out a halfway point and delete all of the newer Up2Date files. 
 # /sbin/auisys.plx --showdesc 
 Start top at the command line, type OxR to see when auisys stops appearing, and then start the Up2Date process in WebAdmin. 
 Set 'Firmware Download Interval' to 15 minutes. 
 Check back to see when newer Up2Dates are ready to apply. 
 Check this forum to see the newest Up2Date you should apply (9.413 as of today). 
 Schedule the previous step at least once a quarter.
