Sophos UTM 9 Home edition - Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper V

Hi,

I am running Sophos UTM 9 Home edition on Lenovo T410 (CPU i7 with 4 cores, 2GB RAM) running Windows Server 2012 R2 - Hyper V. ISP is UPC with connectivity of 200Mb/20Mb.

Now if I use the UTM then the connectivity drops to like 60Mb/10Mb even with turned off IPS, Advanced Threat Protection, Web filtering and DOS/FLOOD. I wonder if there is any bad configuration on my side or if I simply cannot get it working with better bandwidth no matter what. Maybe the Hyper V bottlenecks it? I actually have dedicated 2 CPUs and all 2GB of RAM to the Hyper V and still it does run around 75% of usage pretty much all the time. Do you think that upgrading RAM could increase the throughput ?

Thank you

Kind Regards,

Filip

  • Hi folks,

there are a number of threads about minimum specifications and 2gb of ram with what you have enabled will not be enough, you will need at least 4gb for the UTM and 2gb for the server preferably more eg 3gb.

I have to assume you are running a USB ethernet device, check that it is a USB3 and connected to a USB3 port.

  • Hi chaps,

thank you for troubleshooting. I actually did not realise that my lenovo does not support USB3 and so the ethernet adapter is USB2 therefore the problems with download. SOLVED

Now my question would be if there is any HW appliance that would work for me with home edition?

  • I have just finished moving my UTM from a vm to physical server based on a asus P10s-i using a e3-1225v5 with 8gb of ram. Comes with 2 onboard intel nics.

Currently using about 30w. I have used other mbs but you can check the unofficial hardware thread in this forum for cheaper options.
