Hardware for Sophos UTM home

Good day,

I am looking to purchase a machine so I can host sophos on it. (i dont have spare computers at home).

I was looking at this: http://www.ncix.com/detail/gigabyte-brix-barebone-gb-bsi5hal-6200-core-d1-135173.htm (Missing ram and SSD)

Is it too much? Should I go with some lower specs?

There are max 10 device connected to a time capsule (wifi) but only 2 of them are always online. All the other devices and on and off.

Thanks for all the tips!

  • I would replace an existing machine that is a little older with a new one and then use the older one for the UTM (and possibly add a NIC or two to it).  A fast pentium G or i3 would be plenty for the UTM.  However, one of the big concerns would be what your internet connection speed is.  Fast speeds, more CPU (especially if you are going to use the IDS/IPS functionality).  You really want a couple of NICs rather than the 1 the Brix provides.  You CAN use just one, but far better to separate the zones physically, IMHO.

  • Oh ok. I don't have an old computer :) I use an iMac 2012 and an MBP 2011 and they both work fine. This is why I was looking for a small computer/Appliance to host Sophos. (Fanless / low power would be nice also)

    I have 30/10.

My setup would have been, ISP ->Sophos machine -> Time Capsule with DHCP -> all my assets are on wifi.

So I would need 2 NICs, correct. Did you mean anything else by zones?

    Thanks so much!
