Sophos UTM 9 update caused webserver to stop working

Hello,

Today, after updating my Sophos UTM 9.4 installation to the newest version with Up2Date, the firewall seemed to stop working. I got an email saying "WebAdmin webserver not running - restarted". I waited a bit and couldn't connect to the web portal. I manually hard booted the machine a few times with no avail. It stopped providing internet access also. Windows network troubleshooter was telling me that the dns server wasn't available but when pinging 8.8.8.8  it still couldn't reach the internet. I have tried 3 times to re-install Sophos UTM 9.4 and restoring a backup from both 3 days ago, and almost a month ago. Each time coming to the same result.

Any ideas on why this happened, and what I can do to fix this problem?

  • Try installing from 9.3x, UP2Date to the version of your backup from a month ago, restore, test and then do the same with your backup from three days ago.  Let us know your result.

  • I installed UTM 9.308-16.1 and updated it to version 9.404-5.1 which was the only 9.4 version option I had. My backup is from the version prior 9.404-5.1 ( 9.403 maybe? ) Once it was updated, I went and restored from my backup and after that I then couldn't access the web panel. 

  • There's apparently a glitch for some on 9.404 - hardware-dependent, I guess.  Unless you have an older backup that can be restored to 9.403 or older, I think you're stuck with logging in at the command line at the console or via SSH and, as root, running /etc/init.d/httpd restart.  Maybe 9.405 will clear this up.

  • I've tried logging into the command line with the web console credentials but it tells me it's incorrect. It's been a couple years since I've set this up, it's been more of a "set it and forget it" kind of thing. I don't remember of there was default login information or not. I've done a google search but I can't find anything on it. For now, I will look to see if I have a 4.3 back up hanging around somewhere.

  • It's not the WebAdmin credentials.  At the console, the user would be root and the password the one you assigned when you setup the UTM.  If you didn't configure a password, I think you'll be prompted to create one.  If you did, but you've forgotten it, there's a more-painful way to reset it.
