Anyone used the eglobal fanless mini pc, any suggestions

Hi,

I am looking to install UTM 9 to replace my dying asus router.  My currently broadband speeds is 200up and 12 down which will be going to 300up eventually.

I came across the below at aliexpress which has intel NIC and wondered whether ever used it and if it will be OK.

I was looking to purchase the i7 4500u.

Will appreciate any advice.

Thanks

  • looks like very nice box? What it doesn't say is NIC types, which will come into play for your external interface speed. Also you would need to unsure the base CPU freq is in the mid to high 2.5ghz range. The i7 will more than likely be an overkill for home use.

    Specs, buy 8gb with a 128ssd.

The second would need the NICs checked for compatiibility.

The wifi is not supported by the UTM software.

  • Thanks for the comments.

The dual NIC is as below which I believe should be OK.

    Network card

     Intel 82583V Gigabit Ethernet NIC

  • Hello KunalWagehla,

If you purchase one, please let us know the install went. It appears the Eglobal Fanless Industrial Mini PC only has HDMI for video output. From what I have read from others that can be be problematic.

I am currently in the process of modifying an intel NUC using a lower power i5-4250 and use a displayport 1.2 to 3 in 1, with hdmi adapter. Other on here have posted in the past that the UTM does not have HDMI drivers as that would force Sophos to pay for the use of the HDMI patent.

I am just curious if you purchased the Eglobal Fanless Industrial Mini PC and if so, what resulted when you attempted to install Sophos UTM on the device.

  • Sure will update.  I ordered the i7 which is currently out of stock, will update how the install goes once I have it.

    Thanks

  • I wonder whether usb to vga cable will work.

    Anyone tried it before?

  • Right so I have now received this but unfortunately struggling installing because of hdmi. Box looks excellent built and well made. Can anyone suggest anything, will a usb graphics adapter work or not? Any links to a one I can buy to try? Thanks
  • Just to update I am now up and running using method in the below link I.e installing on different machine and assigning correct NIC via ssh community.sophos.com/.../300007
  • I have the Qotom 4 port nic mini pc which you've linked with 8 gig ram and 64gig m2 sata drive running UTM 9.4 and it's very fast and very responsive. Happily pushes 100mbit of WAN traffic (upload and download ) without breaking a sweat if anyone is looking at the same box.
