How to match installation versions with backups?

I love Sophos UTM, and I like the way I can save a backup up the database and restore it later on. But one major problem is matching database backup version numbers with the installation version. For example, I run Sophos UTM as a virtual machine and tonight I had to do a restore. My latest database backup version was 9.355-1. So what I should be able to do is download an ISO of 9.355-1 which I could restore the database to. But there doesn't seem to be a 9.355-1 ISO to download, so I have to download an old version and then selectively download Up2Date packages and apply them until I get the version number to the one that matches my database backup.

Surely there's a batter way than this, as this is very tedious and error-prone. How do other people handle this situation?

  • You can restore a 9.355 backup to a 9.4 system.  You cannot restore a 9.356 backup to 9.355.

OK, thanks for the info. How can people like myself know which newer versions are compatible with a database backup from an older version? Or is it the case that you can always restore a backup to a newer version, but not an older one? If new versions are backwards compatible with older database backups that makes things nice and easy,

  • Hi,

You have the answer in your question. Backup is always compatible with higher firmware version(s) but a backup from a higher firmware version appliance cannot work on the previous version.

    Thanks
