wifi bug on sg105w when ssid is invisible

Guess I'm the bug tracker for Sophos. Just got my new SG105w which replaces my UTM120v5.
Was able to install that baby without any problems using a fresh backup from my old UTM120.

Only thing was that I'd to wipe the interface and set them up again. Otherwise I'd small problems.
A more anoying issue is the wifi. Wifi works flawless when I keep ssid enabled for my network.

But when I disable ssid visibility I'm loosing my wifi connection after a while on my iPhone and
I'm not able to reconnect to the existing, saved profile. Reenabling ssid visibility solves the issue.

So I guess the Sophos guys have to do some bug fixing on the current release version 9.352-6 (?).
Maybe I try to wipe the sg105w again and install it with hardware appliance with  my home license.

Maybe this one is different and does not have this problem. Does anyone has experienced anything
similar to my problem and/or can reproduce this bug by disabling his ssid (if not disabled by default)?

  • Hi Dirk,

    Greetings.

There is no reported Bug as such, alongside disabling SSID visibility reflects no glitch on the connected devices.

We are using the same configuration,  our SSID is hidden and I am using an iPhone! where I do not get a disconnection.

I request you to upgrade UTM to latest firmware version available and  monitor the wireless.log for your iPhone's MAC address, see what is the reason you get for this disconnection.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for your reply. But honestly. I have this problem. But got it figured out so far.

As long as I don't use auto channeling I got rid of this problem using channel 1 fix.

By the way ...  my UTM was and still is running on the latest up-to-date firmware. [;)]

  • Hi Dirk,

Thanks for the update, I will check with our Dev. Team if any such instance is reported.

  • Can tell you that I now was also able to switch to "invisible" - which wasn't possible using auto-channeling.

So for some reason the sg105w had this problem with the internal wifi. Using my AP50 everything was fine.

I also enabled my wifi SSID on the AP50 and there it was no problem using auto-mode with invisible SSID.

It just didn't work on the internal wifi of the SG105w. Was wondering myself. By the way ... why is the interal

wifi only able to use either 2,4GHz OR 5GHz and not both at the same time? Can I install another wifi card?

Or is that more a software restriction for which you have to buy another, bigger appliance from Sophos???

If not please let me know which wifi card is installed in the bigger Sophos appliances who support both. Thanks.

  • The integrated wireless on the 105 / 115 is not a dual band card, hence why it can only operate on a single band at a time. Sophos is not going to tell you how to install a feature from a higher end appliance in a low end unit. If you truly need dual band capability you'll need to purchase an AP55 or higher external AP.

  • Thanks for your reply ... but if you read my posting propperly you might have recognized that I own an AP50.
So I'm absolutely capable of running dual-band. But I don't like to juice another wifi access point if not needed
So does anyone own a higher dual-band capable Sophos UTM unit and can tell me which card is installed???

  • Hi Dirk,

all the sophos SG1xxw models hav the same wifi card on board. when you use the lsusb command in an ssh session on your utm you see all pci/e bus devices.

On my sg125w the following entry is for the wifi card:

"Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA986x/988x 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter"

You should have the same wifi card on your sg105w. Installing another wifi card on the sg appliance will not work within the utm os, because there are only drivers for the original installed atheros card.

    cheers

    Cheers Andreas
