Looking to upgrade UTM to XG and how it relates to EOL

We have a SG105 with support license, renewed every year.  I read elsewhere on the forum that Sophos is promoting XG over UTM with development.  I figured, maybe with the Shelter in Place order, we could look in to fixing something that is not broken. ;)  Plus, it would be nice to upgrade to firewall manage the ap and have new features.

Article https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/122869 shows the SG105 is eligible for upgrade and migration of license to XG software.  According to https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/121502#SG%20Series%20Appliances, the SG105 doesn't have a EOL declared and the XG105 has a declared EOL date of August of 2022.

if I were to upgrade the SG105 software to XG, will it accelerate the EOL to August of 2022?  Or does the unit remain designated as an SG firewall with XG software and the EOL remains "undeclared"?  Are the any disadvantages to upgrading?  I would like to continue the support licensing with the new platform.

Thanks in advance.

  • Richard,

Have you looked at XG yet?  Install it on a test machine and explore.  You may not want to leave UTM after doing so :)

I've played around with it here and there.  The concepts will take some time to learn. The UI is terrible, lots of white space and grey font on white back ground making readability difficult.

For now, I'll keep playing around with it, but for production use it's UTM in this home.

  • Jay Jay,

Yes,  I have played around with XG.  In fact, I bought a used SG (ebay) to run though the upgrade and understand the new concepts.  I read the two KBs I mentioned above but never made the connection with EOL before purchasing the unit.  For now, I plan to leave things as-is with the UTM.  For the last 4 years, it works well for the business.

Two reasons I started looking in to the upgrade path.  One, I have time with the current Shelter in Place; I wanted to get a head start and explore before being force to and not having the time.  Two, I read that Sophos moved their human resources from SG to XG, ie less development and update frequency. I'm sure Sophos will still put out security patches as needed.  However, there will be a day where UTM will reach EOL.

The two UIs are "different".  It took me sometime to wrap my head around the new way of doing things.  Initially, I didn't like it, too, since I didn't understand the new approach.  After numerous videos, how to articles and playing with the trial, I appreciate the simplify approach.  It was far easier to get setup than UTM.  With XG, the wizard gets the unit up and running.  Adding and managing integrated APs seem very easy.  Although, XG is less work and makes me feel less "macho", setting up rules is nice with the mini wizard-like approach.  With so much to worry about it would be nice to off load the security worries instead of quadruple checking everything.
