Installing Utm on XG Machines (particular XG85)

So i searched the whole Net and couldnt find a guide on How to Install the Utm on Xg machines, in particular the Xg 85 because not all versions have an Vga or hdmi Port, but only Comport.

The best Part first it works great.

I knew it should be possible so i bought a used XG85 to replace my Utm 110/120 rev5 because it reached its limits in Cpu power. After some searching i ordered usb to Rs232 on Amazon for Connecting Pc and Xg. The Thing was shipped and i couldnt await its arrival, just to get the first bummer. The Sophos com -Rs232 was missing.

So i settled on this puppy.

cabled it

And got an perfect Connection using Hyper Terminal like its described here.

Finally i Knew what was  going on and so i checked the Bios setting it all up.The Xg 85 has no Harddrive only 8 gigs of Flash, but no Problem it has a Sata Port. So i had an 120 Gig ssd lying around, which i connected via the Floppy power and the Sata Port, and made sure the Port is enabled in the Bios

Here they said they were not able to make the Sata bootable, but this was a walk in the park compared to figuring out the comport thing. Just make sure that yours is the first

in Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities get your Boot Options straight and your set to run the installer.

i used Rufus to get my stick ready. Then went through all files in the bin if they still were .RPM  or if it forgot some chars. (was a huge Problem a few Years ago but went really smooth this time, all names were correct)

The XG booted into the installer i completed it until i had to chose the drive.

Then i hit ALt-F2, to get the Console running and the install.tar in place. Sadly it wont show it so i had to type the lines blind but they are easy and short so no problem.

If you use a stick greater 10 gb it will show you its sdb place, thats actually helpful with the blind Console Feature

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt

cd /install

mkdir install

cd install

cp -a /mnt/install/* .

cd /

wait until the Copy has finished or you will get missing this and that errors (at the end its: star space and a point )

then hit ALT-F1 finish the installer and you got your Xg 85 with utm finished
