Upload Speed Very Slow

Hi,

I've installed a Sophos SG210 to NTU (Cisco ME3400e) fiber 100Mb/100Mb connection. I get around 68Mb download but only 3Mb upload. I connected my laptop directly to the NTU and getting around 80Mb/80Mb. What would be the problem?

Things I tested:

1. Cable check

2. Disabled IPS & Web filtering and only keep the basic network settings.

One thing I notice is that Sophos WAN port (eth1) showing a lot of errors and collisions. It seems it is because of the half duplex. Would this be the issue why I am getting 3Mb upload speed? If I manually change the duplex mode to full, then the link goes down. I cannot check the other side of the port as it is managed by ISP.

  • One big problem is caused by the high amount of collisions.

Would it be possible to place a switch between the SG and the NTU? Maybe a managed one to get some diagnostic data.

    Best

  • One idea to add, could you try an other Ethernet port of the SG instead of eth1?

  • Half-duplex is old technology.   Anything that runs at 100Mbs should be running full-duplex.

Unfortunately, Auto-detect works for speed but not for duplex, so your symptoms almost certainly mean that one side is set for Auto-detect and the other side is set for 100-Full.   The auto-detect side will configure to 100-Half, and you will have poor performance.

Check with your ISP.   Acceptable settings are Auto on both sides or 100-Full on both sides, but you cannot mix the two.  Match the two and the errors will go away.   Once the errors are gone, you can get a realistic test.
