Which Virtual Appliance Download variant to use?

I'm running VMware vSphere 5, with ESXi 5 hosts. I want to run the Essential Business Edition to route between a vSwitch without NICs and a vSwitch with NICs.

This is what I'm presented with from the link in the E-mail:

I'd like to know how I should decide which download link I should use.

Does the "ESX" zip exclusively for ESX hosts, or does it include "ESXi" hosts? Is the "VMWARE" zip for VMware Workstation?

Should I use the x64 or the x86 zip?

If you want to use the prebuilt VM images, and are running ESX (or ESXi) 4.x, use the esx-v4 image (I recommend the 64 bit one)... if you are using ESXi 5.x, use the esx-v5 image. The other vmware images are for VMware Server, older ESX versions, and older versions of Workstation, etc.

However, I have always done a clean install from ISO (use the software appliance ISO) onto our ESXi hosts...

Note that if you elect to use one of the prebuilt images, change the NIC type to E1000 or VMXNET 3 (or 2), for some reason the prebuilt images come preconfigured with NIC type "Flexible" which is poor in performance -- at least they used to, I haven't used a prebult image in a very long time.

For info on how to do a clean install into ESXi, see: https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/28330 -- only changes (that post was for V8) is that you should use VMXNET3 NICs, the OS should be Other Linux 2.6 64 bit, and the HD controller can be VMware SATA / SAS.

Also note that on VMware, sometimes the NICs get placed in an "unnatural" order on latter version of Version 8, and on Version 9... see https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/28567 for info on how to readjust the NIC ordering to your liking.

Thanks, I'll try the esx-v5-x64 image then. Any idea what the "vmware-x64" image is for?

Thanks for the tip on the software appliance, it's a much smaller download too. How do you install the VMware tools with the software appliance?

64 bit install on VMWare workstation.

I agree with Bruce, my preference is to install fresh from ISO instead of using the pre-canned VMs.

BTW, they used to have a readme file in that prebuilt image directory that described what image goes with which VMware edition; for some reason that's gone, but if you download one of the zips, and open it, they do have a doc in there listing the compatible hosting products.

Barry is correct, the 3rd party VMtools are already installed in the prebuilt images; you cannot update, remove, or install other VMtools versions, Sophos updates the tools from time to time in their firmware updates.

If you do a clean install from ISO, the installer auto-detects that you are on VMware, and will automatically install the appropriate tools; again, you cannot update, remove, or install other VMtools versions, Sophos updates the tools from time to time in their firmware updates.

I would like to say that, if you are running VMware vSphere 5, with ESXi 5 hosts then you should use utm-9.003-esx-v4-x86-smp.zip download link. Because it is very reliable for the VMware vSphere 5, with ESXi 5 hosts.
