v18 was supposed to introduce a new OS core.  Anyone noticed anything different regarding this ?

A new core should be as evident as an elephant having a shower in your bathroom, no ?

  • Hello Big_Buck,

I agree, I also lack any information on this topic from developers. I would expect more information too.

But might it was just a fog or a fairy tale for little kids for good night?!

    ;-)

P.S. To Luk, do you know something about a new kernel in XG v18?

  • No Alda. It seems that everything on the top level is the same...I am not sure that someone will confirm/unconfirm this from Sophos side. Let's see!

To capture user attention, make sure to use @ and you put the name of the person. Formally I am . From friends, Luk!

  • I think this is partly why most of us are deflated to say the least.  All this talk of v18...anticipation...and it's just more of the same.  Sad really.

Maybe like you say, by v20, it will be where we all thought it would.

  • A rewrite was one of the things that had me really looking forward to v18. I was cautious yet optimistic when all the promises were being made as a lot of promises are always made when the next version is due. I don't use XG anymore but was curious to see v18 (due to old astaro brand loyalty). Only sophos knows their internal sales numbers but I think they are probably ok since they keep offering very similar product with good ad campaigns every version.

  • Yeah, I'd have to say so far I am pretty disappointed in this as well.  It seems like the same old same old.  Don't get me wrong, there are some interesting new features tacked on, but that's what they appear to be; tacked on.  Logging is still dreadful.  Still can't do DHCPv6-PD, and on and on.

  • Paul,

not on my side. I am quite busy these days to spend time on XG. I should install a v17 and compare things on the boxes but it is a waste of time. I am not paid for that.

I am disappointed too with this version and an official document from Sophos could help on what really changed in this release. Personally, I am still waiting for the list of fixes in the refresh 1 v18, but silence "reign" here.

Since the history, this was a community where the vendor was very transparent. Hiding things does not help at all. Other communities are not so open but this is the same thing Open source vs COTS SW.

The power of open is sharing. I am not happy with this version since things are still working and "they are built on pins".

We are waiting for Logging and reporting modules, which are the eyes of every firewall since v15 and the situation is still unknown.

More than be here, share our idea, trying to help and sometimes even ungry for closing or removing comments, (all for free), tell me if this is not passion.

  • XG v18 changes many parts of what is core to the firewall. The data-plane change in itself is a large under taking - from a kernel upgrade to the new DAQ structure. The UI hasn't changed much, however, the core packet processing does.

Xstream SSL Inspection, Deep packet inspection (DPI) Engine, FastPath offloading, improved enterprise NAT engine, Threat intelligence analysis, Proxy-less malware scanning and web filtering - are a few example of the foundational improvements with the new Xstream architecture.

    To find out more -

we would love it if you could join us for a special community webcast happening on Thursday, November 14.

We will be looking into some of the top industry problems that XG Firewall v18 is solving, as well as reviewing some of the key innovations in this release and the new features that you requested. Our product team experts will also be there to answer your questions live.

  • Hi Paul,

There has at least been a Kernel upgrade, v17.5 was 3.14.22 and the v18 is 4.14.38.

Other than what Parth has said, most of the upgrades seem wholly background, not foreground.

  • Hello,

hopefiully this webcast will not be marketing blabla, instead we would expect real "Tacheles" .

To summarize the infos I got from this EAP so far: I am shocked how immature SFOS and the XG platform obviously still is.

If I am asked by a customer: "Shall I go with SG or with XG?" I couldn't answer that.

I will stick witrh the SG in our production scenarios as long as it is supported and stable.

UNTIL it is proved, that XG is a REAL and STABLE alternative, which I on't see at the moment.

BTW: don't get me wrong: I would like to switch to XG, but I am reluctant when it comes to stability and awful support experience.

We have several XG machines running on 17.x, but these are small setups, nothing critical and our own inhouse lab.

    Just my 2 cents.
