The captive portal does not show automatically when access any URL

After configuring my XG 85 firewall to use captive portal, I was not able to get the captive portal when type in my browser any URL for instance "www.ibm.com".

The only way to get the captive portal is typing the URL "http://172.16.16.16:8090".

After spending some days trying to figure out what is happening I openned a case with Sophos support. An engineer from Sophos help me finding a solution. In my case the XG 85 is not using any license.

According to engineer support I should have license installed to have captive portal automatically appearing when I type any URL in my browser. I installed a trial web protection license in my XG 85 and the captive portal starts appearing when I type any URL in my browser.

Of course you need to configure other things for the captive portal to work, but this is better explained in other articles in this forum.

I believe it will be better that the captive portal should appear even if you do not have any license installed, but unfortunatelly it is not that way.

First it should appears Captive Portal/Authentication page when you hit any HTTPS url (e.g Google.com, yahoo.com etc.) in browser but it is gives error (not secure, This connection is not priveate) , besides when you hit any HTTP url then it working fine as expected. So what is the exact solution for this.

If it needs to authenticate on an HTTPS connection, it needs to decrypt and scan the encrypted tunnel. It does so using man-in-the-middle and sending the browser a redirection using it's own Certificate Authority. If the browser does not trust that CA it will display a warning. The captive portal site itself also uses a self-signed certificate (if "Captive Portal uses HTTPS" is selected under Authentication, Services).
