Noise level - XGS 107

Hello,

I’ve got a client with a very quiet office where we have installed an XGS 107.  Even though it is in the closet, they can hear a whining noise from it that winds up every couple of seconds or so, and then down again.  I can hear it as well.  It is a very low volume, but penetrates somehow, if that makes sense.  In a server room or behind a heavy door it probably would not be noticeable.

This is my first XGS unit so I don’t know if this is normal.  I do know that I never heard this sound from any of the XG units I have deployed.

my questions are;

had anybody else noticed this noise?

What is the likely source?  I can’t tell if it is a fan or HDD.  I would suspect that any drive is solid state, which would leave just fan.

Is this normal?  Might there be any settings I could tweak to reduce noise?  Possibly need an enclosure of some sort to dampen the noise?

thanks.

  • Just heard back from the customer, and they confirmed that the most recent OS update actually made the noise worse, and not better.   What are the chances Sophos would take it back in exchange for an XG unit?

  • My first Sophos is the XGS, so I can't compare to an XG, but it seems like the performance increase is really large to trade away. I'm certainly satisfied with the performance and the features, and the idea that I can pretty much use all of its features full-on without throttling my bandwidth. (Right now, I'm stuck at 20/5, which is painfully slow -- especially for large uploads. Switching providers to get 200/200, which I think is pretty close the the XGS 87's capacity with all the goodies enabled.)

  • Yeah, it's very situational.  In this case, my clients don't need the extra performance, but are bothered by the noise.

  • Hello Stephen,

I also had experience with significant fan noise in the EAP phase of XGS (in the beta phase of XGS development). The reason was the old version of CPLD in EAP2. After upgrading to EAP3, the increased fan noise stopped. At the same time, after the EAP3 update, it was necessary to switch off the HW appliance for at least 2 minutes from the power supply, but by completely disconnecting the power cable from the HW appliance!
It is possible that even in your case, a complete disconnection from the power supply for at least 2 minutes could solve the problem with fan noise.

I received a recommendation for complete disconnection from the power supply from Parth Mistry and it definitely solved the problem.

Try it and let us know if it solved your problem.

P.S. I'm sorry, I forgot to write that it is not so important that you have the GA version v18.5 installed, but it is important that it is a complete disconnection from the power supply!

    Try it, please!

  • I will give that a shot on Monday when I can get on site again, and let you know.  It would have been fully disconnected once already, though, between when I configured it in my lab and when I took it to site for install.

  • I just installed a XGS107, too. It's annoyingly loud in a quiet environment, even right beneath a Synology 8 bay NAS doing a backup to a USB disk.
I had it on the desk while installing and it was not pleasant.
When I had completed my tasks I switched it off with the power cable off to put it in a 19" cabinet and I have the feeling, it is louder now.
We have SFOX 18.5.0 GA Build-289 on it.

  • This is really beginning to seem like a widespread issue.
