Noise level - XGS 107

Hello,

I’ve got a client with a very quiet office where we have installed an XGS 107.  Even though it is in the closet, they can hear a whining noise from it that winds up every couple of seconds or so, and then down again.  I can hear it as well.  It is a very low volume, but penetrates somehow, if that makes sense.  In a server room or behind a heavy door it probably would not be noticeable.

This is my first XGS unit so I don’t know if this is normal.  I do know that I never heard this sound from any of the XG units I have deployed.

my questions are;

had anybody else noticed this noise?

What is the likely source?  I can’t tell if it is a fan or HDD.  I would suspect that any drive is solid state, which would leave just fan.

Is this normal?  Might there be any settings I could tweak to reduce noise?  Possibly need an enclosure of some sort to dampen the noise?

thanks.

    Hi ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community!

I'll follow up with the internal teams regarding this and update you.

    Thanks,

    • Awesome, thank you!  Please let me know whatever you can find out.  They are asking to swap it out but I would love to find a way to make it work.
  • Which version do you have installed? There was a early issue with the Fan speed, which caused the fans to pump of for no reason.

  • My XGS 87 is surprisingly loud as well. The actual fan and air movement are not, but there is a resonant frequency that the fan excites in the frame that has a high-pitched and annoying sound. I've tried using several things to dampen the sound while still keeping proper ventilation. It is worst off of the side of the device that it sounds like the fan is on. And it does like to spool up and down in speed which tends to draw attention as the pitch changes. I love the device and its serving me well, but this is the one negative: it isn't really a desktop unit if the top of the desk is in the same room as you.

  • As suggested by LuCar Toni, I am currently updating to SFOS 18.5.0 GA-Build289.  I just checked and the version on there is SFOS 18.5.0 GA-Build264.  Not sure if this is going to make any difference, but will have my client check tomorrow - it should be pretty obvious if this cures it.

  • I have this installed. No difference. In fact, I my impression is that the box was running hotter and the fan used more than in the previous release.

(I'd assumed this was the result of (temporarily) throwing more load on the CPU and less on the XStresm processor to fix a bug that required folks to disable some fast path features to avoid a crash. I could have the story totally wrong, but it's what came to mind to explain the increase in fan noise.)

  • Sorry, didn't mean to discourage you. It's possible that your loud is really a lot louder than my loud -- higher-capacity machine -- and so what made mine a bit worse 4-12 feet away, line-of-sight, could actually make yours quieter. Or maybe yours is more air moving and mine is more resonant frequency and in your case it helps.

I wouldn't give up hope that it might help, just adjust expectations that it might not help.

  • Heh, no worries - your issue sounds very similar, though, unfortunately.  I'll update tomorrow if there is any difference, but I'm not holding my breath.  Hopefully we can get something from Sophos.

  • The issue is: BIOS Updates and FAN regulations are basically done via BIOS updates. If the appliance came with a false setting within the bios, this actually cannot be fixed with a firmware OS update (as far as i know).
